I love chocolate, and I love chai. The California Tea House has combined these two loves into one fabulous blend! This is one of the best Chocolate Chai blends that I’ve tried (and I’ve tasted quite a few over the years). What makes this one so delightful? Well, put simply, it’s the chocolate. You can actually taste it in this blend!
Unfortunately, with chai teas offering such a strong spice base, usually the chocolate flavors are lost in amongst the more dominate flavors of the chai. However, in this blend, the chocolate dominates, yet the warmth of the spicy flavors still comes through nicely. This is truly a delicious union of flavors that I LOVE!
The fragrance is warm and inviting. The chocolate scent is well pronounced (yum!) and the spice blend of cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and cloves are also present in the aroma. It’s positively irresistible!
California Tea House describes this tea as…
Hot, spicy chocolate… need we say more? Here’s the more: cocoa kernels, natural cinnamon sticks, chicory root pieces, cardamom blooms, fresh-cut ginger root, cloves, pink peppers, and coconut preserves. Perfect with milk and sugar.
As I said before, the dominant flavor in this blend is the chocolate, amongst the backdrop of cinnamon and the other spices. The spice is warm but not spicy, and the coconut adds a smoothness to the flavor. This would be a perfect after-meal tea to enjoy with dessert, or even instead of dessert! The flavor is much like a gourmet truffle!
Sweetener is recommended, as it brings out all of the subtle flavors in this tea, allows the coconut to shine through, and gives the chocolate center stage. It’s also quite lovely with milk (I used half & half and it was so sumptuously creamy and decadent), but it’s also quite good without the addition of milk.
For all you chocolate lovers out there, this is THE chai blend for you! You won’t be disappointed!

"When I was a kid, in the middle of winter, my friend Penny and I eachbought a quart of ice cream, skated to the island in the middle of our lake and ate them. Soooo good and soooo naughty. It keeps us young to be naughty sometimes. I would just go for it an enjoy!"

"Well, as someone who has tasted a lot of chai tea, I can attest that this really is not very similar in taste to Chai. Chai tends to focus on the spices, whereas this tea’s focus is on the orange, with the spices being very gentle and more of an accent to the orange."

"How fun! I love drinking tea so I love that you have a whole blog related to reviewing them. One brand that I really love that I don’t see on your list is the Portsmouth Tea Company. When I lived in Boston I used to buy lots of their teas and they were oh so unique. They had some really great fruity and floral blends. It’s interesting that..."

"Haha!! My co-worker told me that she purchased this tea after having purchased the Matcha Latte at Seattle’s Best, and her and another co-worker purchased this because they believed it was what was served there. She stated to me today that “it didn’t seem the same exactly…it felt like their was something..."

"I’m not absolutely certain, but I believe that this is the concentrate that Seattle’s Best coffee shops use to make their matcha latte. The lattes I’ve enjoyed there were sweet with a definite melon flavor… and I have noticed that they sell other Tazo teas there. If it IS the concentrate that they use… I am..."

"Steph: Thank you for your information about the naranquilla. I didn’t find the flavor to be very tart at all – which is what I would have expected from the combination of lime and rhubarb. Perhaps the maraschino sweetened it up a bit and made it much more peach-like. It reminded me a bit of candied apricots or peaches."
