Sowmee White Tea from Culinary Teas

Sowmee White TeaThis is the most unusual unflavored white tea I’ve ever seen or tasted.  Rather than being silver or light green in color, which is typical of a white tea, these leaves are brown with flecks of green, much like a black Darjeeling (except that these leaves are much larger) or a dark Oolong.

Similarly, the flavor is much more like a dark Formosa Oolong than a delicate white tea.  While most white teas tend to possess a very light flavor, the flavor of this tea is much deeper and distinguished, with a slight malty tone and a mild astringency.   It is a very smooth – no sharp notes to speak of – and rich tasting tea, with absolutely no bitterness.

Culinary Teas describes this tea as

Visually Sowmee is not a typical white tea, since it is sun-dried after special hand rolling. Its pleasant toasty character is astringent and full flavored.

Sowmee is generally a lower grade of white tea; however, you really should not allow that to influence your decision to give it a try.  If you like fancy Formosa Oolong teas, you will probably really enjoy this tea as well.  I found it to be a very pleasurable tea to experience.

Since its flavor is more distinct, this is a white tea that would work well as either a hot tea or an iced tea, and would also hold its own (without its flavor being overwhelmed) with the addition of a slice of lemon.  It’s delicious without sweetener, but if you feel like being a bit naughty, you might try it with a drizzle of maple syrup.  Yum!
