Hojicha Gold Tea from Culinary Teas

Hojicha GoldI love Hojicha tea.  The toasty aroma and flavor are just so warm and inviting, reminding me just a little bit of roasting chestnuts – which seems to inevitably lead the mind to thoughts of the holiday season.

This Hojicha Gold Tea is a very fine example of that delicious, roasted, nutty goodness.  Hojicha is a green tea, but because the leaves have been roasted, the liquor brews to a golden brown.  The usual, fresh, slightly grassy flavor of the typical green tea has been replaced with a roasted flavor that is rich and smooth, and not at all grassy.   It has a deep, earthy characteristic with caramel notes that is absolutely delightful.

Culinary Teas describes their Hojicha Gold Tea as

The roasted green tea takes on a full bodied character with almost cinnamon toast-like notes. Delicious character that many tea drinkers enjoy.

Although I’m sure it’s probably pretty good served iced, I think that the roasted, toasty flavor should be served hot (You wouldn’t serve fresh, roasted chestnuts cold, would you?)

The delicate sweetness of this tea needs no additional sweetener, although I must admit that a drizzle of maple syrup propels this tea from delicious to dreamy and absolutely decadent.  A perfect Hojicha – delicately sweet, roasted to perfection – Yum!
