Chocolate Chai from Zhena’s Gypsy Tea

Chocolate Chai from Zhena's Gypsy TeaThis herb and spice blend from Zhena’s Gypsy Tea is part of their Harvest Herb line of exquisite teas.  Their chocolate chai does not include any real tea leaves; however, the ingredients it does use in this blend are mouthwatering!  Especially if you are a fan of chai teas, because this is a beautiful example of a non-tea-based spiced chai, which  has distinct chocolate tones brought by the carob and chicory.

I think the best way to serve this one is with added sweetener and milk or milk alternative.  I added soy milk and just a dash of turbinado sugar.   Although even if you do not use milk or sweetener, this chai -although spiced- is incredibly smooth to drink.

The most prominent flavor is of cinnamon, followed closely by a nutty chocolate flavor, as I mentioned, from the carob and chicory.  There is a hint of honey in the background flavors,  and I believe this is from the Rooibos in the blend. The ginger is also moderately strong, and you are able to detect it in the brew; however, the licorice is very subtle and harder to detect… I believe it lends a slight sweetness to the blend, but is not recognizable as “licorice” in the flavor profile.

Zhena’s Gypsy Tea describes this tea as:

Our Harvest Herb Teas are bountiful blends of fresh, hand-harvested herbs, wildcrafted flowers, choicest fruits, leaves and spices, all USDA Certified Organic and Fair Trade Certified(TM). Each cup will delight the senses and will have you hearing leaves crunching underfoot and smelling the scent of wood smoke wafting the chill air. Amber moon on the horizon not included.

Ingredients: From the Cedarberg Mountain Region of South Africa comes this superior grade, caffeine-free organic Rooibos, blended with the rich, exotic taste of Mediterranean carob and the zest of ginger and cinnamon bark. Chicory and licorice root, round out this delicious thick, warming cup. Wonderful with a splash of milk.

Embossed recyclable air tight tin containing 22 sachets of certified 100% fair trade and organic tea.

This is a nicely rounded chai tea, with the high quality typical of Zhena’s Gypsy Teas, and although the description only mentions the sachets, they  offer this as a loose leaf tea also, which I prefer to the sachets, even though the sachets are perhaps more convenient.  This is a wonderful wintertime tea to warm you up on cold November nights!

Orchid Temple Oolong from Golden Moon Tea

Orchid Temple OolongThe aroma of this tea is quite exotic and enticing:  a beautiful fresh, leafy scent with a lush, lingering floral fragrance, much like walking through a dreamy, blossoming forest filled with orchids.  The beautiful aroma is matched by the fresh, smooth flavor of this high quality Oolong.

This tea is what I refer to as a “green” Oolong.  Oolong tea leaves are semi-oxidized, falling somewhere between the non-oxidized green tea leaf and the fully-oxidized black tea leaf.  A greener Oolong is oxidized a shorter period of time and the leaves are typically a deep, vivid green color.

The flavor of this charming green Oolong brings to mind fresh sweet cream.  Not as thick and creamy as sweet cream, of course, but, the velvety texture of sweet cream is not unlike the smooth, rich mouthfeel I experience from this tea.  There is also a delicate sweetness to this tea that is similar to the sweet flavor of cream.  This light-bodied, aromatic tea has absolutely no bitterness nor any astringency, but it does have a lovely, intricate flavor with a deliciously silky floral finish.

Golden Moon Tea describes this tea as:

Harvested in the Wuyi Mountains, our Orchid Temple will take you back to the birthplace of Oolong tea. Powerful and exquisite in its classical roasted aroma. A sweet finish makes each sip a lifetime of complexities. We tightly roll for value – as your flavor will linger richly through several infusions.

This tea is best served hot – as it chills, some of the unique attributes of this tea lose themselves in a more homogeneous flavor.  I think that this tea is best served without additional sweetener – I did try a little bit of agave nectar toward the end of my first cup and I felt that the sweetness overwhelmed the other characteristics of the tea.

On their website, Golden Moon Tea suggests that dark chocolate would be an excellent pairing with this tea, and so I took that advice and grabbed a dark chocolate truffle to devour while sipping it.  Perfection!  After taking a nibble of the truffle, I noticed that some of the more sensuous floral notes were brought to life on my palate, and it truly elevated the flavor of the tea, creating a luxurious, indulgent experience.

Of course, it would be difficult to find any tea (or anything else, for that matter) that wouldn’t be improved with dark chocolate.  So grab yourself some chocolate and a cup of this fabulous tea – you deserve it!

Harvest Moon from Tea For All Reasons

Harvest Moon from Tea For All ReasonsJumpin’ Jack O’ Lanterns, this tea is GOOD!!  As the seasons in the Northern Hemisphere change from the warm summer into the cooler fall months, this is the absolute perfect tea to welcome the joys of Autumn.

The very appearance of this tea is one of the first things to catch your eye!  I love the bright orange Jack O’ Lantern candies and blue & green candy sprinkles which make this blend so festive and inspiring – the PERFECT Halloween tea!

The aroma is also incredible, it smells like Halloween!  There are spices, but they aren’t definitive of the flavor or fragrance.  The huge cardamom pods also lay amidst the tea and aesthetic candies, and they give the tea a distinct “chai” fragrance.  You can also smell the apples, which along with the spices, remind me of harvest time.

Tea For All Reasons describes this tea as:

For those who enjoy a good cup of Chai, this truly unique blend combines China black tea, green cardamom, black cardamom, cloves, apple bits, fennel seed, cinnamon and candy sprinkles for an outstanding twist on this flavor sensation.

This is a truly unique and outstanding autumn tea blend, one that everyone should have in stock for All Hallow’s Eve!  And the flavor…the flavor is absolutely BURSTING with autumn pleasures…spices, tangy apples, and even more unique, it has a candy corn flavor as well! I was truly surprised of the quality of this tea.

If overbrewed, the licorice flavor from the fennel will end up dominating, and making it taste strongly of licorice, so be sure to brew this tea for no longer than 2-3 minutes at most with hot (but not yet boiling) water.  The decorative candies may melt into the tea, however it doesn’t matter if they do not as they are not used predominantly as a flavoring, but instead just for the “cute” aesthetic aspect.

This tea is good with or without sweetener, and while it does lend itself to milk as Chai teas do, I prefer to drink it without any milk as I feel it softens the flavor too much.  Another great Autumn blend from TFAR!
