I have been longing to try this tea for quite some time now. It all started when my eye first caught sight of the tin (yes, it’s the tin thing again) and I wanted the tin for my collection. I hesitated for so long because, to be quite frank it was a rather high price to pay for just a tin – without being certain that I would like the tea inside.
Finally, I decided to order the tea along with the Ceremonial Singles that I recently reviewed. I mean, I enjoy Matcha, and I enjoy Genmaicha… so I felt fairly certain I’d enjoy this.
Now that I am tasting this tea – I really wish I hadn’t hesitated in the first place! This is one spectacular tea! This may very well be the best Genmaicha I’ve ever tasted. It is certainly the best Genmaicha with Matcha I’ve ever tasted!
What makes this Genmaicha so exceptional is the use of Tencha tea leaves as opposed to Bancha or Sencha. Tencha tea leaves are cultivated differently than either Bancha or Sencha. Bancha and Sencha are grown in direct sunlight, whereas Tencha is grown in the shade, which creates a sweeter, smoother grade of tea. Furthermore, Tencha is the same tea leaf that is ground to powder to make Matcha – making this tea blend a perfect pairing!
This tea has a pleasantly sweet character with a smooth vegetative note. The toasted rice gives it a sweet, nutty quality. It is such a delight to drink this tea! The addition of the Matcha creates a brighter colored liquid that is a bit less transparent. It gives a certain bittersweet note to the tea that is more sweet than bitter!
DōMatcha describes this tea as
DōMatcha™ makes the world’s best tasting Genmai Cha. Unlike all other genmai cha which is made from bancha leaves and roasted rice, we use tencha leaves and matcha with roasted rice, creating an extremely smooth tasting green tea with a delightful nutty flavor.
This truly is a delightful tea to drink. It has its own natural sweetness so no additional sweetener is necessary. A truly extraordinary Genmaicha!

"I am a tea drinker and this cocoa shell tea has been a bit of a revelation for me. I was looking for an alternative, change of pace source of caffeine for my weekends and this fits the bill. One tablespoon brewed for 10 minutes provides a subtle chocolate taste with about the same level of caffeine as green tea, which is perfect for me. I am trying to..."
