Genmaicha from AiyaSo I am presented with a tea that has puffed rice in it…this should be interesting, it certainly looks it. Matcha infused Genmaicha from Aiya is unlike anything I have ever seen before.

So I know what you are now thinking, puffed rice in tea may seem a little odd but this tea has a lovely nutty aroma.

On opening the pack you get a faint aroma of white chocolate and then the puffed rice aroma contributes to a punchy nutty scent. Once this tea is brewed it has a lovely sweet, nutty and yet malty flavour that gives you a great big hug!

I have brewed it with a strainer and also just poured the water over the leaves and puffed rice and this works perfectly also. Once brewed with the tea strainer the leaves unfurl and the puffed rice sits with the leaves. Once brewed without the strainer you get water infused with leaves and puffed rice and whilst the leaves sink and unfurl at the bottom of your cup the nutty puffed rice floats and that’s when the malty aroma starts working its magic. The puffed rice starts to sink to the bottom of the cup after 3 or so minutes and this then makes it easy to drink with or without a strainer…thank you Aiya!

Aiya describes this tea as

Medium-fine Senchas are mixed with roasted rice and/or puffed rice. This added ingredient makes the Genmaicha taste aromatic, malty and nutty.

A striking, freshly roasted rice aroma, paired with the delicious freshness of Sencha. Light brown, rich cup color. Can be enjoyed both hot and cold.

Overall Matcha infused Genmaicha is a sweet, aromatic wave of nuttiness.
