Cherry Vanilla Chocolatte Red Tea from kalahari

Mmmm, this tea is yummy. Well, that’s sort of a vague description, isn’t it! So perhaps I’d better expand it a bit.

Since this tea comes in the convenient form of tea bags, I can’t spend a lot of time describing the tea leaves for you. Nor is there much of an aroma to the unbrewed tea bag – the bag sort of prevents one from getting a lot of aroma notes when you first open the package. Hence, I start with the taste of the brewed tea.

Red rooibos has a little bit of a spicy taste, and that really complements chocolate well, if the chocolate is done right. In this case, it’s done right: dark roasted cocoa. We should note here that although rooibos is caffeine-free, cacao (chocolate bean) has some caffeine as well as other stimulants; while it’s a much lower level than black tea, if you are very sensitive to stimulants such as caffeine, you may find that a brewed cocoa-infused tea contains enough caffeine to keep you awake a bit. I personally find that a cup of hot chocolate keeps me awake as much as tea does at night, but there’s much less cacao in this herbal tea than there is in hot chocolate, so I can drink a cup in the evening, as long as I don’t overdo it.

And it wouldn’t be difficult to overdo it, since this is so tasty! The cherry note is mild, the vanilla flavor robust, and the chocolate flavor nicely complements both. There are also a few spices in there, for an overall effect like a chocolate chai. It’s a wonderful flavor for a winter evening.

Kalahari Tea says this about the tea:

The blend of naturally caffeine-free herb with the deep flavor of roasted cacao, sweet notes of fruit spices and breathy botanicals, to create a symphony palate-pleasing delight.

1 box, 16 individually wrapped sachets.

Ingredients: Dark Roasted Cacao, Organic Rooibos, Cinnamon, Licorice, Chicory, Cardamom, Ginger, Cloves, Vanilla and natural Cherry Flavor

If you’ve followed my reviews here for a while, you know that chicory is one of my favorite flavors, and I find that it makes other “dark” flavors taste richer and deeper; that’s what it does here for the spicy rooibos and the cacao.

At the date I write this, there’s a special running, according to Kalahari’s web site:

Kalahari loves it when you love Kalahari, so we’re offering a special discount on bulk orders. When you purchase 6 boxes of this flavor, we will give you $3 off your total.

Great excuse to order enough of this to last you all winter!
