Selby Select Rooibos from Local Coffee + Tea

Selby Select Rooibos from Local Coffee + TeaI love that this tea is named after a Botanical Garden in Florida. The Marie Selby Botanical Garden in Sarasota Florida is an open-air and under-glass museum of more than 20,000 colorful plants, many collected in the wild on over 150 scientific expeditions to tropical rain forests by Selby Gardens research staff.

The aroma of the dried leaves is extremely strong and smells just like freshly squeezed orange juice!  When brewed, the leaves take on more of a rooibos fragrance.

The flavor has heavy overtones of red rooibos, which is a unique and naturally sweet taste.  If you don’t like red rooibos, you probably would not like this tea; however if you have not tried rooibos, or enjoy it, then you should definitely try this tea.  Underneath the flavor of red rooibos is a sweet, smooth and creamy orange flavor.  It isn’t as purely orange as the fragrance of the dried leaves; however it still has an authentic orange flavor.

The yogurt pieces add a strong creamy finish to the flavor of this tea, although be aware that yogurt pieces (as with all milk products in teas) can go bad much more quickly than other teas, so remember to throw your old tea away before the milk product curdles .

Local Coffee + Tea describes this tea as:

Rooibos is a direct translation from Afrikaan meaning RED BUSH and is a natural herb which grows around 1500 to 2000 feet above sea level in the Cedarberg Mountains of the Western Cape of South Africa.

Rooibos seeds are planted during February and March then tended for 18 months. The entire bush is harvested, cut and milled to a uniform length before bruising between rollers which triggers the oxidation process. This turns the tea from green to its characteristic reddish brown color and develops a natural sweet aroma.

Our Rooibos has a soothing effect on headaches, disturbed sleeping patterns and digestive or colic problems. Many of our daily recommended nutrients can be derived from hot or iced cups of Rooibos, such as Iron, Copper, Zinc, Magnesium, Fluoride, Manganese and Sodium which means healthy skin, teeth, bones, blood and metabolic functions.

Does this all sound too good to be true? We don’t think so, and we drink a ton of Rooibos at Local Coffee and Tea, and we are all very healthy specimens!

This is our custom blended Rooibos with orange peel and dried yogurt pieces. Created to celebrate the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, this is our perennial best seller. Each sip releases the aroma of sweet ripe oranges, followed by creamy notes on your tongue. You will think you are drinking Florida sunshine in a magnificently serene garden. Savor and enjoy! Naturally caffeine-free

This tea is naturally sweet, but I added sweetener to it anyway and it was very enjoyable.  A bit of milk would work with this tea also if you have the inclination, but might take away some of the more subtle orange flavor nuances in the tea.  Overall a lovely red rooibos blend that is wonderful to drink year round!
