This is the first time I’ve sampled a specifically Darjeeling based Earl Grey. And it was quite apparent from the beginning that this was a Darjeeling. If you are used to Darjeelings, you will know what I mean. It has a very distinct refreshing muscatel black tea flavor.
The bergamot is a lot like the flavor of a first flush Darjeeling, so it’s hard to distinguish between the two flavors here, and because both are such delicate yet strong flavors, you can easily overbrew them causing the tea to become bitter or tart. This is one tea that you need to brew carefully!
Teapigs describes this tea as:
Most of the Earl Greys you find use a poor quality tea base from China, which is like palming yourself off as landed gentry when all you own is a Barbour. We use the finest Darjeeling from the foothills of the Himalayas and add to it the finest bergamot citrus from sunny southern Italy to create something altogether more gentrified.Compare the large leaf in our tea temples to the dust in your regular tea bag; whole leaf is best.
The exotic, floral tones of Darjeeling tea are balanced with the zesty citrus taste of bergamot.
With a slice of lemon, no milk – that’s the way we like it, but each to their own. Same with the sugar.
Good if you’re feeling:
Bored, lethargic and in need of a lift. Gives a subtle boost to concentration without a dizzyingly unnerving caffeine headspin.
Indeed, their ingredients and their teas are of the highest quality. And I love the Teapigs packaging – attractive yet functional! Although this tea is unique as a Darjeeling Earl Grey, I feel this tea is much more of a Darjeeling with bergamot flavoring than an Earl Grey using Darjeeling tea, if such a distinction can be made.
A little bit of sugar definitely takes the edge off this one, but milk is a definite no-no. This is a lot more light-bodied than most Earl Grey teas. Like they say in their description, a slice of lemon does really accent this tea quite well. This is a tea that is delicate yet strong. Certainly one-of-a-kind, which can be said of all Teapigs teas!
