An Irish Rum from Adagio Teas

While the rum is the strongest flavor here, I think its the accents of lime and peppermint that really give this blend it’s definition. The rum tastes smooth and sweet, the lime gives it just enough tart to make it interesting, and the peppermint gives it a crisp, clean taste. This tea really makes my palate happy!

The green tea tastes fresh and sweet, and there is just a slight hint of bitterness to it. There is also a vegetative quality (imagine that!) to it, but I wouldn’t really categorize it as a grassy note so I suspect that the vegetal flavor is more a result of the artichoke flavoring rather than the green tea.

I really enjoyed this black tea. It makes a stunning iced tea (and it’s turning out to be quite a hot summer, isn’t it?), but I also like it fine as a hot tea. For a really special treat, I recommend trying it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a Blueberry Tea Float. YUM!

A very creamy taste with a delightful caramel-y note. The black tea base used in this blend is a pleasant tasting black Ceylon tea. So, when I found “Butterbeer” tea (a blend created by Robert Pirlot) while browsing Adagio’s website, I was very intrigued. As butterbeer is not an actual beverage, but part of a fictional series, I have never actually tasted a butterbeer.

On this cold gray morning, I’m sipping away at the Chocolate Chai. While some teas are delicately spiced, I’ve noticed that across the board, Adagio tends to have very bold Chais, with lots of ginger and cardamom. In this particular blend, the cardamom is the strongest flavor, even stronger than the chocolate. It does smell like rich chocolate, but tastewise, the chocolate is quite light, almost elusive, dancing in and out behind the rich spices.

The initial flavor in the tea reminds me slightly of a black tea. I am not sure if it just my tongue playing tricks on me, because I enjoy mango iced tea. The finish remains so light and ends with a nice fruity flavor. There is no tea aftertaste, it is such a delicate green. It is 100 degrees here in Tampa, Florida and I am drinking this tea hot, but I would guess it is just as tasty over ice.

I think what makes it work for me is the delicious mango flavor. It seems to soften some of the harsher tones of the Maté, giving it a bright, nectar-like taste that is very true to the fruit. It is sweet, but not overwhelmingly sweet, as the earthy tones of the Maté counter the sweetness enough to keep it from tasting too sweet.

This tea brews up a deep ruby color (because that’s the way princesses like it). The hibiscus in the blend is light enough so that the tea doesn’t become too syrupy thick (or tart!) but there is enough in there to give it a pleasing hue and just enough tartness to cut through some of the strawberry and vanilla sweetness.

However, with “Thai” in the name, sippers might expect something similar to the blend used in Thai iced teas, and this is not it. I brewed it for a little over 2 minutes with water at about 180 degrees. The liquor is an attractive gold color. Sadly, although the tea had a sweet taste, there was no taste of blueberries! Boy, am I disappointed. There is still the barest hint of blueberry scent, but that’s all, folks.

An earthy first steeping and a spicy second steeping – and the mesh pyramids this whole leaf tea comes in make it more convenient for a second steeping. On the first steeping, this is a medium-colored brew, with an earthy flavor – a bit mushroom-y, a bit nutty. Not too green, not too dark, as smooth as an oolong should be.

the tea was much gentler than it’s brewing aroma suggested, especially when I put in some more hot water after the first sip, which was indeed a bit much in the strength-before-taste department. There was my Yunnan, with its faint hint of spice, a bit of cocoa and yes, some woodiness thrown in.
