This would make a lovely tea to serve at a garden tea party – even if it’s a tea party for one in your own backyard. A very enchanting brew!

The brewed liquor takes on a more subdued fragrance that is very similar to what I experienced with the dry leaf, but there is something more – almost earthy and even a little bit like … coffee. A little unusual but since I like the smell of coffee, I don’t mind it at all.

The leaves are long and wiry, and have that lovely sweet grape-like muscatel aroma. After steeping, the liquor also has the scent of sweet muscatel, reminding me of a fragrant apple blossom. There is also a faint woodsy smell, as if I was walking through damp leaves and twigs. Upon tasting the tea, the muscatel and woodsy notes are there, but they are quieter. A faint astringency lingers. The tea becomes more thick and full bodied farther down in the cup. A delicious experience.

This tea is called Flower of Hawaii, and such a name evokes thoughts of warm climate and vacation. Relaxation! A nice, calming cup such as this is just perfect.

The flavoring is sweet, but not too sweet. The bitterness in the tea is not a “this tea has been steeped too long and is undrinkable” kind of bitterness, but a soft, savory bitterness that counters the sweetness just enough. The result is a very luxurious, relaxing cuppa!

The spices used in this blend are common for masala spiced chai teas: cinnamon, cloves, ginger, cardamom and pepper. They create a warm, spicy taste to this that is well-rounded and flavorful. I like the peppery addition to this chai, because it really perks up the overall cup.

This is a delicious blend, very soothing and relaxing to sip. But then, that should come as no surprise, as TeaGschwendner doesn’t usually disappoint me when it comes to the flavor of their teas and tisanes. The only real disappointment with this tisane is that it is no longer available!

The best way I can think of to describe the flavor of this cup is to imagine having a bowl of strawberries, and instead of them being sprinkled with sugar, imagine sprinkling them lightly with pepper instead.

"I am a tea drinker and this cocoa shell tea has been a bit of a revelation for me. I was looking for an alternative, change of pace source of caffeine for my weekends and this fits the bill. One tablespoon brewed for 10 minutes provides a subtle chocolate taste with about the same level of caffeine as green tea, which is perfect for me. I am trying to..."
