This Douji has a distinctive earthy flavor, more coppery than vegetal. 2011 Douji pu-erh tea was my drinking tea for today and I could not discern anything but that earthy, slightly coppery taste in the liquor and aroma. The aroma is not unpleasant, however some people enjoy the scent of Pu-erh tea more than others.

A unique and delicious chai that is certainly worthy of its name. This chai is different than many spiced chai teas because it does not have cardamom or ginger, and instead has nutmeg, which creates a distinctively different flavor. The rooibos aren’t really significant in the flavor – I can’t really detect much of the woodsy flavor it imparts, but I can’t say that this tea would be the same without it.

Typically, with an unsweetened berry tea the taste is usually slightly tart or sour enough to make your taste buds water. But not so with this tea! The berry flavor was strong, but it was never too sharp. I think the rose hips and other flavors must have set off the tartness nicely. There is also a vegetative quality (imagine that!) to it, but I wouldn’t really categorize it as a grassy note so I suspect that the vegetal flavor is more a result of the artichoke flavoring rather than the green tea.

What is especially nice about this particular blend is that there is a nice balance of flavors. There is no overwhelming flavor profile here; it is a soft harmony of berries. The apple, while it is not strongly pronounced, seems to provide a fair amount of smoothness to the flavor, and brings a touch of additional sweetness to the blend.

I think this tea is named well. It is definitely “Americanized.” That is not necessarily a bad thing; it just means that some of the sharp Indian spices have been slightly toned down. I also have some suspicions that that “flavoring” is some kind of sweetener (because you know how us Americans love sweet stuff). What I especially like about this tea is its unique flavor. Chamomile tends to be a strong flavor all by itself and usually overpowers any other flavors in the tea.
