Decaf Green Tea from Davidson’s Tea

Miss Ash
Miss Ash

So I’ve been searching for something just right. Often I’ll throw in a home-mixed herbal tisane, but what if I want something other than herbal? For my entire last year, I was at a loss for loose leaf decaffeinated teas. Even better than it simply being decaf green tea, this is also organic, which makes me giddy like a kid in a candy shop. I try to be conscientious about what I put into my body, and while many of the teas I drink are not organic, if given a choice, I prefer it to be chemical free.

This tea is extraordinarily complex in flavor, with layers of floral notes that are sweet, with only a very slight pungency, which is rewarded with a layer of “thickness” that I can only describe as a silky, buttery feel to the mouth. It is pleasantly sweet – no additional sweetener is needed for this tea, and if you typically sweeten your tea, you might want to taste this one before sweetening as too much will certainly overpower the delicate layers of flavor here.

ITO EN has made two understatements in this tea – this tea is very VERY green, and very VERY Japanese. An earthy first steeping and a spicy second steeping – and the mesh pyramids this whole leaf tea comes in make it more convenient for a second steeping. Cozy and toasty are words that I would use to describe the flavor of this amazingly complex tea as well. It has a very comforting flavor to it: slightly smoky but more of a “roasty-toasty” taste than smoke.

The green tea is a mellow, vegetative flavor. It’s not an overwhelmingly strong grassy flavor, rather, it is a pleasant, delicately sweet green tea. The real star of this tea is the popped rice, which provides a very delicious roasty-toasty flavor to the green tea. It’s a very delightful combination.

It has an almost honey-like undertone to the fragrance and flavor. The flavor is polished and robust, with a brisk aftertaste which clears the palate leaving a “golden” flavor on your tongue. Love it!
