This Douji has a distinctive earthy flavor, more coppery than vegetal. 2011 Douji pu-erh tea was my drinking tea for today and I could not discern anything but that earthy, slightly coppery taste in the liquor and aroma. The infused tea has a pale golden color, like liquid amber. The taste is sweet, a little vegetal, with a surprising spicy cinnamon-like finish that lingers on the palate. It’s almost peppery. The tea has an incredibly soft and smooth mouth-feel that relaxes my body and mind. It is very calming. The sweetness gives my mood a nice little lift. It is a basic white tea but since the flavor is modest, it would probably be tasty added to fruit juice or other drinks. It’s a good tea to have around the office, or for travelling.

You can taste the maltiness of the Assam and the smokiness of the Keemun along with the bright notes of the Ceylon tea. The Sumatra tea adds a depth of character and brings all the flavor notes together nicely. In other words, this blended bagged black tea is exquisitely classy and upscale for a bagged black tea. I have to say this is one of my favorites!! This is a tea I would keep in stock in my tea cabinet year round as it makes a perfect “anytime tea”.

The leaves are long and wiry, and have that lovely sweet grape-like muscatel aroma. After steeping, the liquor also has the scent of sweet muscatel, reminding me of a fragrant apple blossom. There is also a faint woodsy smell, as if I was walking through damp leaves and twigs. Upon tasting the tea, the muscatel and woodsy notes are there, but they are quieter. A faint astringency lingers. The tea becomes more thick and full bodied farther down in the cup. A delicious experience.

This is a really stout, strong matcha. It has an almost bittersweet flavor which brews up to make a good solid matcha, whether hot or iced. I found that this matcha is a bit strong for a classic hot matcha. However when brewed up as a latté this matcha is absolutely perfect.

Matcha Miyabi has a grassy aroma to it which can be a little off-putting to those who are new to the tea. A tea that can either be bracingly strong or mild and delicate, all within an amazing 1 minute time frame. The aroma was only a fresh tea scent with a very slight floral note to it. The tea was still smooth, but delicate, and really, quite bland. As it cooled, there were a tiny bit more nuance to it but not much.

While Pu-erh generally does not become bitter, I have noticed that if I steep it too long, I end up with an exceptionally earthy brew … but that didn’t happen even though I didn’t keep track of how long I steeped it. Especially good if you would like to start getting into green teas but do not care for the strong vegetal taste. This tea has enough strength and depth of flavor to keep you satisfied. The roasted notes give it a little oomph that would be fine in the morning, yet is light enough to drink all throughout the day.

Although this tea is delicate and light-bodied, I’m finding it surprisingly full of flavor. I can taste pleasing notes of flower and fruit, as well as a faint nutty note. It has a very pleasing sweetness to it, and there is also an intriguing grassy note to this Pai Mu Tan that arrives right about mid-sip, and disappears just as quickly as it arrives.
