Assam Borengajuli from Culinary Teas

Assam BorengajuliI am very impressed with the quality of this Assam from the Borengajuli estate.  This one of the very best black Assam teas I’ve ever tried, and I have tasted quite a few!

The aroma is pleasant enough, with delicate hints of sweet fruit (although this is an unflavored tea).  However, where this tea really impresses me is in its deep, rich color and of course, its outstanding flavor.  It is a very robust Assam — most Assam teas are rather brisk — with an excellent malty quality that is unmatched in many of the Assam teas I’ve been privileged to try.

When I first poured the tea into my teacup, I was quite astounded at the color of the tea.  It is a very dark, burgundy-black color that I’ve rarely seen in a black tea (which, despite the moniker “black”, tend to brew to either a brown, reddish, or coppery colored cup).  I knew that I was in for a very rich, bold cup of tea.

And the flavor is indeed rich and bold.  The malty notes to this tea are extraordinarily intense, a characteristic that is further intensified with the addition of milk or cream (or dairy substitution of your choice).  The astringency to this tea is also nicely softened by this addition.

Culinary Teas describes this tea as:

Malty with a jammy-like flavor best describes this premium Assam tea. The tea is vacuum-packed at the Borengajuli Estate capturing the pungent 2nd flush flavor at its peak.

I was also quite impressed when I read more about this tea here.  What especially interested me was the great attention dedicated to the vacuum-sealing process.  Tea tends to lose its flavor quite rapidly, so it is reassuring to learn that the Borengajuli estate is dedicated to preserving the qualities of this extraordinary Assam.

While the Culinary Teas website suggests serving this tea either hot or chilled, I rather prefer it hot.  That might be due to the weather, but, I also feel that Assam teas tend to lose some of their malty, coppery appeal as they cool.  A tea of such fine quality deserves to be served in a manner in which its flavors can be savored, and in my opinion, that means serving it hot.

This tea is certainly good served with no addition of sugar or cream, and would be appreciated by those who like their teas strong.  I prefer my tea a little on the softer side, so I did add a little agave nectar and cream.  As I said before in this review, the cream especially highlights the profound malty tone to this tea, and as such, I highly recommend this addition!

The strength of this tea makes it a perfect choice as a breakfast tea.  It’s vibrant flavor will really get you going!

Aini Ancient Tree Green Pu-erh from Dao Tea

  • Type Of leaves: Pu-Erh Tea
  • Name Of Tea: Aini Ancient Tree Green Pu-erh
  • Available From: Dao Tea

Aini Ancient Tree Green Pu-erh from Dao TeaAlthough I truly love Pu-erh tea, I will admit that I do not have much experience with green Pu-erh tea.  However, if this green Pu-erh is representative of it’s class, then I must be trying much more in the future!  This, like all Dao Teas I have tried, is not only one-of-a-kind, but also of remarkable flavor and quality.

The quality of this tea is apparent in the dried leaves, which made such an impression on me, because I’ve never seen dried tea leaves quite like these.  To begin with they are LONG tea leaves.  Even dried, although they are slightly curled, I would say these are 2-4″ (5-10 cm) in length, and so incredibly beautiful.  These tea leaves will have to be broken down a bit if you need them to fit in a tea infuser, however I prefer to just let the tea leaves naturally sink to the bottom of the glass, and sip from the cup without any straining.

Each tea from Dao Tea is handcrafted by a Master tea artisan, which is what makes this tea so beautiful and unique.  Not manufactured in a factory, but instead by an individual who has had years of experience in tea.  The tea was hand-blended in the village of Nannuo Mountain, in the Yunnan province of China by Tea Master Yang Si.  Here is a short biography of Master Yang Si:

Tea Master Yang Si

Tea Master Yang Si

Yang Si is a farmer and master tea-maker from the Aini people (one of Yunnan’s 23 ethnic minorities). A true artist, Yang Si uses different tea making techniques according to weather conditions and the characteristics of each particular harvest.

Once the long tea leaves have been brewed, the tea is a very pale yellow color, and holds a most enticing earthy and refreshing aroma.  The flavor is very mellow, and is indeed a cross between pu-erh earthiness and the crisp grassy flavor of green tea.  This is a very smooth tea, and the tea leaves can be re-brewed between 3-5 times and still hold a delicious flavor!

Dao Tea describes this tea as:

The Experience

Mellow yet powerful, these leaves pack the scents of a misty morning in the old growth forests of southern Yunnan. The golden brew, as it swirls in your mouth, awakens the taste buds and leaves a sweet aftertaste. A tea to be sipped, not gulped, it is a pleasure with breakfast. You may also find it delightful in preparation for a session of yoga or tai chi.

Well Being

Tea master Yang Si’s ancient trees grow on steep mountain slopes, amid wild orchids, moss-covered trees and transparent springs. The Aini people attribute general health, energy enhancement and proper digestion to this wonderful tea.

Tips for a multi-sensorial tea experience

Place 3g of tea in a 200ml pot. Gently pour on water, which is between 85°C and 90°C. Cover, swirl lightly for 15 seconds and pour the brew into teacups. The purpose of this first brew is to “open” the tea leaves and warm the cups and should be discarded before pouring the second brew. Enjoy the aroma permeating in and around your teapot. Pour water again into the pot, cover and swirl for 30 seconds and serve in the previously warmed cups. Sip or slurp (Chinese recommend this to “mix air and water”); expect a pleasant, stimulating feeling on the tip of the tongue and a sweet aftertaste at the back.

This is easily one of the best Pu-erh teas I’ve tasted, with it’s smooth earthy flavor and light aroma.  Indeed it makes a wonderful tea for meditation, or at the end of the day, to reflect upon the day’s events.

This tea is best served hot, without any sweetener or milk.  Sweetener or milk would completely ruin the beauty and flavor of this tea.  This would make a truly fabulous tea to brew Gong Fu style, if you enjoy that, or a perfect tea for a simple Yixing clay teapot, if you don’t wish to follow the entire Gong Fu ceremony procedures.  I have the highest regard for this tea, and find it to be a wonderful tea no matter how you decide to serve it!

Tangerine Ginger from Octavia Tea

Octavia tangerine gingerNow this is a unique tea! It is a mix of Green and Oolong and I love it!

Aside from these teas being so healthy for you, Octavia has blended them so well, that neither overpowers the other!

It’s flavored “tangerine” which to me just tastes citrus-y, but nice. It too does not overpower the flavors of the tea itself.

Unlike the White Ginger Peach, which I felt had the perfect amount of ginger, I can’t even taste any ginger in this tea, and if I was to complain, that would be my only criticism.

However, I love this tea, and drink it often. Being with the Oolong in it, I’ve taken the chance and brewed it more than once, and have been very happy to find that it re-brews wonderfully.

Be very careful though, not to get your water too hot when brewing this tea. If it’s at a full boil you will cook the leaves and loose a lot of the lovely flavor. It also does not brew well if you have overheated the leaves.

Here is how Octavia describes this tea:

The fragrance of sweet tangerine rests on a layer of spicy ginger in this antioxidant-rich infusion. Known for its metabolism-boosting properties, the exquisite tea used in this blend is a balance of both Green and Oolong.

I am very impressed with all the teas I’ve tasted from Octavia. I plan on trying more of their tea in the future. And this lovely tea blend will always be one of my favorites!

Sugar Plum from Tea For All Reasons

Sugar Plum from Tea For All ReasonsOne thing I always enjoy about the holiday season is the delicious winter teas that come with it.  This holiday tea, Sugar Plum, just wouldn’t taste right in the summer, while it makes a perfect hot tea for a cold winter day.

This tea has a very strong and delicious plum flavor to the mild black tea base.  I really love plums and especially plum candy which is quite popular in Asia but not readily available here in the United States.  So this tea is certainly a treat for me!

The rock sugar in the blend lends a slight sweetness to the blend, however I love sweet plum flavors so I added a bit of Turbinado sugar to my tea as well.  This is not a tea that goes well with milk of any kind.

Tea For All Reasons describes this tea as:

You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the flavoring of this China black tea that is blended with deep, rich and delectable purple plum slices and flavoring, combined with small bits of rock sugar for a touch of sweetness and sparkle. You’ll see “visions of sugar plums dancing in your head!”

The real plum slices are truly enticing, lending an authentic plum-like flavor to this tea.  The fragrance is also a strong plum scent, along with the fragrance of black tea.  The plum may be strong, but it never overwhelms the lovely black tea base either.  One of my favorite holiday blends from Tea For All Reasons!

Ginger Peach White Tea from Octavia Tea

octavia Ginger Peach WhiteOh… I just love this tea!!! I enjoy having a quality white tea that I can drink any time of day.

The peach flavor mixed with white tea, gives the peach a fresh from the orchard taste – not a peach candy flavor. It’s like tasting the fresh skin along with the peach.

I also love ginger in my tea, but many “ginger” teas disappoint me because either they are so strong I can’t taste anything else, or I so weak I can’t even discern the ginger!

This tea however, has the perfect amount of ginger to compliment the peach and white tea. There are small pieces of dried ginger in the tea, and just the gentlest ginger flavor, adding to the earthy freshness of the cup of tea.

Here is how Octavia Tea describes their Ginger Peach White tea:

Transport yourself to a fragrant orchard in mid-summer with this sweet blend of mouth-watering peach, ginger and rare white tea. White tea is said to be the healthiest of all teas and is picked only a few days each year.

The addition of sweet peach and zesty ginger to the subtle taste of White Tea creates an exceptionally flavorful blend.

I often brew this tea several times, increasing the brewing time a bit each time. It makes a healthy, refreshing cup tea.

Green Tea Strawberry from Frontier Co-op

Green Tea Strawberry from Frontier Co-opThis strawberry flavored green tea from Frontier Co-op is a lot different than most strawberry green teas I’ve sampled.  Perhaps it’s the addition of hibiscus, but to me it’s a slightly different strawberry flavor than you might expect. The strawberry is sweet and just slightly tart at the same time.

There really isn’t much of an aroma to speak of, with the dried or brewed leaves, however the flavor is quite strong, and the hibiscus quite distinctive.  The taste is smooth and tangy at the same time.

Frontier Co-op describes this tea as:

Vegetal green tea flavor, with nuances of fresh, sweet strawberry. Pretty pink infusion.

Ingredients: Organic green tea, organic strawberries, organic hibiscus, natural strawberry flavor.
Caffeine: Contains Caffeine
Organic: QAI Certified Organic

This tea does indeed brew up into a pretty pink infusion, also due to the hibiscus.  I drank this tea with no milk (this is NOT a tea that goes with milk) and just a little bit of sugar.  But the sugar seemed to make it a bit too sweet, so I think this tea is also quite delicious when served plain.  Would also make a great iced tea in the summer.

English Breakfast from Octavia Tea

octavia english breakfastThese tea leaves are very dark, and small. It brews up a lovely dark, reddish brown and is fantastic with milk and sugar – just as an English Breakfast should be!

I was very happy when I first tasted it. It was very smooth on the tongue. It has a bit of smokiness, but it’s not strong – and it’s almost a sweet smokey, with not astringent taste.

Most English Breakfast teas are a blend of teas, but I had a hard time discerning what might have blended into this tea until I went to the website to read about it. To my great surprise, it is a pure Assam tea!

I like Assam teas very much, but they are often quite smokey, and usually too smokey for my husband’s taste. However, he enjoyed the two cups of tea I brought him this morning!

Here is how Octavia Tea describes their English Breakfast:

Our traditional English Breakfast is a single-estate Assam tea from India with a bold, bright, full-bodied flavor. Rich in protective antioxidants, this classic tea is the perfect companion for early mornings.

English Breakfast yields a rich, reddish-brown infusion and has an assertive, well-balanced flavor with lots of body. If you like a strong, classic black tea, this one’s for you.

It is a very classic tea, strong, bold, but I must again emphasize smooth! I tend to prefer my breakfast tea to have some, or a lot of Ceylon blended in it, but I could drink this English Breakfast every morning!
