Peach Lift from Apollo Tea

Peach Lift from Apollo TeaThe aroma of the dried leaf is not very strong, but this is made up for with the brewed tea – it smells amazing!  It’s like a walk through a peach orchard while the fruit is ripe and begging to be tasted.   This tea makes me think of summer!

The flavor of this tea is delightful!  The peach flavor is strong, sweet and fruity – and conjures images of biting into a fresh, sun-ripened peach.  It really is that good!

The base of the tea is a medium-bodied, mellow flavored tea.  It is not extraordinarily pungent, although, with the fresh and fruity flavors that come alive in this cup, I don’t really think I’d want the tea to be too brisk.  That is not to say that the tea is not good – it certainly is – that is just to say that a bolder tea would most likely intrude upon the delectable peach flavor that I’m enjoying.

Apollo Tea describes this tea as

This high grown Ceylon tea creates a great taste experience with a full flavored, yet delicate peach character.

I don’t necessarily agree with the “delicate peach character” – as I’ve said previously, the peach flavor is spectacular here, yet not at all what I would consider delicate.    This tea is delicious served hot, but is even better chilled, making it a wonderful summertime treat (and yes, summer is coming!)  Either way, I do recommend sweetening it just a little to enhance the flavors.   Another serving idea:  instead of sweetening with sugar (or honey or agave nectar), drop a couple of pieces of candied ginger into your cup – yum!  I love the combination of peach and ginger!  So good!

Andes Hit from My Tea Shelf

Andes Hit from My Tea ShelfWhat a delicious herbal tisane, with quality that I’ve come to expect from the folks at My Tea Shelf. Each bag is made from entirely compostable materials, and each bag’s tag is attached by hand, and the cute sewn on tag is hand-stamped with care.    Really, from the moment you open the bag to the time you throw it away, My Tea Shelf makes sure that your experience with their tea goes above and beyond your expectations.

This particular blend has two different versions at My Tea Shelf.  This version, Andes Hit, contains caffeine from Yerba Mate (read more details below!), so it will definitely be appreciated by those who need that extra kick of caffeine with their tea (like me!!).  However if you are looking for this exact blend without any caffeine, My Tea Shelf offers exactly that in their Andes Breeze blend of tea which is the same blend only without the Yerba Mate in it.

My Tea Shelf describes this tea as:

How many ways can you say organic? Let me count the ways. Chamomile, spearmint and raisins are just a few. Then there’s lemon verbena and basil leaf thrown in there too. Add some organic cinnamon, cloves and fair trade certified Yerba mate for a little kick. Then top it all off with apples and what do you get? The perfect blend of tea, with just the right amount of love.

Ingredients: Organic chamomile, organic spearmint, organic lemon Verbena, organic basil leaf, organic cinnamon, organic cloves, organic apple, organic raisins, organic fair trade yerba mate. Contains caffeine

See also Andes Breeze, same blend without Yerba Mate or caffeine.

With chamomile, spearmint, lemon verbena, and basil, this makes a MOST excellent stomach tonic, to soothe an upset stomach and help to naturally treat nausea, morning sickness, or indigestion.  The apples, raisins, and other ingredients certainly make this a tasty and delicious herbal treat.  While the chamomile and spearmint are the most prominent flavors, you can tell each ingredient adds something special to this unique recipe.

This tea makes an excellent tea to wake up to in the morning, with it’s crisp and minty flavors and boost of caffeine.  Also makes a wonderful iced tea for the summertime as it turns smooth and refreshing when iced.  Great with or without any sweetener, as the ingredients give it a naturally sweet background flavor.

The part of this tea which adds the caffeine is the addition of Yerba Mate to the blend of herbs.  The flavor of brewed yerba mate is strongly vegetal, herbal, and grassy, reminiscent of some varieties of green tea. Caffeine is naturally-occurring in Yerba Mate, although an eight ounce cup of Mate contains only about 30 mg of caffeine, according to a recent Health Canada report, compared with 47 mg of caffeine in a cup of tea and 100 milligrams in a cup of coffee. Additionally, the leaves of the rainforest Mate tree naturally contain 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids and are rich in antioxidants — with reported ORAC antioxidant levels even higher than many brewed green teas. Because of these nutrients in Yerba Mate, it provides almost identical effects that regular tea or coffee gives to wake you up or give you a “mental boost”, but without the caffeine jitters. It’s the same caffeine as in other beverages, but thanks to the synergistic combination of balancing nutrients, the net effect of Yerba Mate is far different from that of coffee.

Because of the addition of Yerba Mate, I feel this tea has a slightly different, fuller flavor than Andes Breeze by My Tea Shelf. Without the addition of Yerba Mate, Andes Breeze is still a delicious minty and calming herbal tea, but lacks the gusto of Andes Hit with it’s delicious Mate leaves. Love refreshing herbal teas? Give this one a try today!

Ti Kuan Yin Tea from Ten Ren Tea

Ti Kuan Yin Tea from Ten Ren TeaI’ve said it before (err, quite often, actually) and I’ll say it again:  I love Oolong tea.  So much so that I try to enjoy some Oolong every day.

So, even though this is a bagged tea (I’m not crazy about bagged tea, typically speaking, the flavor and quality is of a lower standard than that of a loose leaf tea), I was happy to receive a few teabags of Ti Kuan Yin recently from a friend.

This medium-bodied tea has a “baked” sort of flavor – similar to the taste of a freshly baked loaf of bread.  There is also a slight smoky essence to this tea that is quite enjoyable.  The mouthfeel is thick which compliments the soft, yet rich buttery taste of this tea.  A pleasant sweetness lingers on the palate in the finish.

Ten Ren Tea describes this tea as

Ti Kuan Yin is a tea that is related to the oolong tea family as a semi-fermented tea. This tea is considered a dark oolong tea because it is baked longer and allowed to ferment longer than the typical oolong tea. Ti Kuan Yin from Taiwan tend to be more spherical than oolong tea leaves. The tea has a reddish brown color, a strong baked aroma, a rich taste, and a lightly sweet aftertaste. Water at about 185°-195°F or 85°-90°C should be used for steeping.

This is a delicious Oolong that is nice served hot, and would be equally as nice served iced (and that time of year is approaching quickly, isn’t it?)  Even though I am not crazy about tea bags, they do offer a certain amount of convenience and that’s very important, especially on those days when you just don’t have time for loose leaf tea.

This tea is very self-drinking.  It does not need to be sweetened as it has it’s own, natural sweetness that enchants the palate – and it should not be served with milk!  Delicious taste and convenience – all in one tea bag!

Sleepytime® Vanilla from Celestial Seasonings

Sleepytime® Vanilla from Celestial SeasoningsI normally don’t like Celestial Seasonings. It isn’t their teas I don’t like – their blends are absolutely exceptional for a bagged tea. But that’s the problem, they are bagged teas. And normally speaking, I don’t have much of a problem with bagged teas, I don’t feel they are inferior to loose teas necessarily, some teas are just as good bagged as loose. However, Celestial Seasoning is the only company I know of that doesn’t package their tea bags individually. I see this as a huge negative point for the company overall.

The teabags in a box of Celestial Seasoning tea are all laying loose and together in the box, sealed inside a bag that’s reminiscent of the inside of a cereal box. This allows for the teas to loose their freshness and flavor much more quickly, and any type of contaminant (a fly or moth in the package, mold, dampness) spreads through all the bags almost immediately, making the entire package contaminated. For this reason, I only buy or drink Celestial Seasonings teas on very rare occasions when I really think I will enjoy the tea inside, and be able to go through the box quickly before the bags lose their freshness.

On the Celestial Seasonings FAQ at their website, they state:

Our unique pillow–style tea bag is the result of our commitment to doing what’s best for the environment. Because these natural fiber tea bags don’t need strings, tags, staples or individual wrappers, we’re able to save more than 3.5 million pounds of waste from entering landfills every year!

Celestial Seasonings, let me say that I would MUCH rather you use recycled materials to create individual packaging for your tea bags than know that I’m saving the environment. Better yet, make your teas LOOSE teas and be responsible for bringing the wonder of loose teas to the public and available at most supermarkets.

Celestial Seasonings describes this tea as:

Vanilla lovers, rejoice! We’ve added the creamy, nutty flavor of rich vanilla to Sleepytime’s beloved blend of floral chamomile, cool spearmint and lively lemongrass. With its comforting aroma and perfectly balanced flavor, Sleepytime Vanilla is an exquisitely soothing new way for you to wind down your day.

100% Natural
This product contains all-natural herbs and flavors, and no artificial colors or preservatives.

Ingredients: Chamomile, spearmint, West Indian lemongrass, natural french vanilla flavor, tilia flowers, blackberry leaves, hawthorn, orange blossoms and rosebuds.

Now, although I truly dislike their packaging, this particular tea is worth it in my opinion. I have always been a fan of their “Sleepytime” tea, as it is a light and relaxing herbal tea blend with highlights of mints and chamomile, with a background of floral delights. When I saw this “NEW” Sleepytime® Vanilla from Celestial Seasonings, I knew I had to buy the box, even though I normally don’t buy any teas from the supermarket, let alone from Celestial Seasonings, because it sounds SO GOOD!!

I wasn’t disappointed. This tea brews up very quickly and can be enjoyed at almost any temperature, with or without added sweetener. This is the PERFECT children’s tea, as it is not only caffeine-free, but also very delicious, with a unique flavor that both kids and adults will enjoy. The vanilla is both prominent and realistic…it tastes like real vanilla bean, not cheap imitation vanilla. The sweet creamy vanilla flavor complements, but does not overpower, the “Sleepytime” herbs, including a strong chamomile and spearmint character, with lemongrass, tilia (aka limeflower) leaves, along with a burst of citrus in the background.

A perfect hot tea before bed, or serve iced to relax during hot summer days, in fact I almost like this blend better iced than hot – even though it is an exceptional tea served either way. A truly outstanding tea that suffers only from inferior packaging!

Root Beer Float from The NecessiTeas

If you have kids, you’re going to want to read this review…

This tea is amazing!  It really tastes like root beer.  But … it isn’t root beer.  It’s something much healthier – rooibos.

Rooibos is a naturally caffeine free herb that is native to South Africa.  It is loaded with antioxidants.  It’s the kind of “tea” that parents want their kids to learn to like, and with this particular flavored rooibos… that wouldn’t be a difficult task.  If they like root beer (and what child doesn’t?), they’re going to really like this!

In this blend, the naturally sweet, nutty, woodsy flavor of the rooibos works so well with the root beer flavoring.  It has a very authentic taste that is reminiscent of an old fashioned root beer that you would find at a soda fountain.  The taste of sassafras and licorice.  Sweet with hints of spice.  Delicious!

This tea also has a creamy vanilla touch to it – which is where the “float” part comes into play.  Personally, I think it tastes a little less like a “float” and a little more like a soda fountain root beer with a drizzle of vanilla syrup – but that’s ok, because this happens to be a favorite soda fountain treat of mine!

The NecessiTeas describes this tea as

This blend will take you back to your childhood days sitting on the porch sippin on those old time root beer floats. Perfect with a touch of sugar and a splash of milk, you will swear you were drinking the real thing! Naturally caffeine free!

This tea is delicious served hot, but it becomes truly amazing when served as an iced tea.  In fact, brew up a pitcher of this and serve it to your kids instead of a soda – they will hardly notice the difference and even when you add some sugar to this (and it really does enhance the flavor so I recommend it!) this is so much better for them than a soft drink.

One thing I would like to note, however, is that you want to use a light hand when sweetening this tea.  I noticed that on one occasion of tasting this tea, I had added a little too much raw cane sugar to my cup, and this was a mistake that seemed to enhance the artificial sweetener taste that I often attribute to rooibos.  (You know that icky taste that remains in your mouth after drinking something that has been sweetened with saccharine?  That’s the “artificial sweetener taste” I’m talking about.  Rooibos doesn’t actually contain saccharine, it just has that funky sort of taste to it sometimes.)

However, when sweetened with a light hand, this tea is quite delicious.  If you really want to make something special – add a little bit of milk to the tea.  This really brings out the creamy flavor and truly makes it a “root beer float!”  It is an excellent choice for children and adults alike.

Angel’s Dream Tea from Metropolitan Tea

Angel's Dream Tea from Metropolitan Tea CompanyI must say this tea surprised me in more ways than one!

The aroma is delightful. Mostly a sugary maple scent with the tea scent to back it up.

It’s medium brown in color.

This is a bagged tea.  I’m NOT one of those loose-leaf ONLY type tea drinkers…I will try anything once.  There are some REALLY good bagged teas out there – you just have to search for them!  I truly believe this is one of those really good, flavorful bagged teas!

I can taste primarily the maple, but it’s not overwhelming. I can also taste the blueberry a bit as well. It sort of reminds me of blueberry pancakes with maple syrup minus the pancakes.

The 2nd steep seems the maple taste is a little less and the blueberry a little more.  Sometimes I will resteep a bagged tea if I am in hurry.  When I first sampled this tea…it was ‘one of those days’.

Metropolitan Tea Company describes this tea as:

Angels Dream is a heavenly tea with maple sweetness, blackberry pungency, juicy Assam’s, and a hint of our mystery green tea. Take wind and fly.

There’s just something about the maple/blueberry pair…I didn’t think I would like it – but I really do. This is a great flavored tea/treat in a bag….great for days on the go!!!

Cranberry Blood Orange from Republic of Tea

I have often said that I’m not a big fan of bagged teas.  More often than not, the flavor is inferior to that of loose leaf.  But occasionally, I do find a bagged tea that I enjoy.  Like this tea, for example.

The black tea base is smooth and strong.  It is not so strong that it overwhelms the fruit flavors of this blend, but it doesn’t hide behind those flavors either.  It has a faint bitterness to it as well – not the kind of bitterness that comes from steeping the tea too long, but, just a hint of bitterness that rests upon the palate and gives the tea a full and interesting flavor.

The cranberry flavor is tart, and the blood orange adds a juicy sweetness… overall, the flavors are very well-balanced.  The aftertaste has a very tart, berry-ish appeal to it… that tart, tangy feeling that the tongue experiences after eating berries.  The flavors are very authentic – they do not taste artificial.

The Republic of Tea describes this blend as

Tart-Sweet, fruitful blend of cranberries, black tea, and orange peels. Bountiful in flavonoids which help to maintain a healthy heart.

This is a very “autumnal” tea – that is to say, the flavors remind me very much of autumn.  Perhaps that’s because I usually add bits of orange to my cranberry compote that I serve on Thanksgiving.  I love how the orange and cranberry taste together – sweet, tart, and delicious.  That’s just the flavor that I get from this tea.

Since it does have that autumn-ish feel to it, it makes a delightful hot tea.  But, it is also quite good iced too.  Very invigorating and thirst-quenching.  In addition, this is a Fair Trade Certified tea.  This is a tea that you can feel good about buying, and will leaving you feeling good when you drink it!
