Ceylon Nuwara Eliya from Drink T

Ceylon Nuwara Eliya from Drink TWhat a beautiful coppery liquor!  It has a deep aroma of fruit – peach, perhaps? – and spice, and an underlying woodsy quality.  The fragrance is quite intriguing and begs me to take a sip.  It is quite fragrant for a “unflavored” Ceylon.

The sip begins with a presentation of a fresh, almost-fruit-like taste that tastes a bit like a combination of apricot and black currant.  It is slightly sweet and slightly tart.  A spice note hits the palate almost immediately after the introduction of the fruit, I wouldn’t describe it as peppery, but more like a warm hint of spice.

The medium-bodied tea has a fair amount of astringency that is slightly drying and possesses a slight bitter note that hits the back of the palate.  It is not a strong bitterness nor is it off-putting, in fact, it enhances the overall cup by adding an additional dimension of flavor to the profile.  The astringency gives a clean finish with very little aftertaste – leaving just a bit of a smoked wood taste on the tongue.

Drink T describes this tea as

Ceylon is the former name of the island nation Sri Lanka, located just off the southeastern coast of India. The name of the country was changed in 1972 but the teas are still known as Ceylon’s.

The Nuwara Eliya region is home to the highest-situated tea estates in Sri Lanka. Teas from this district have earned the designation “Champagne of Ceylon” teas.

Our Nuwara Eliya is selected from the highest quality leaves. It brews a bright, strong and highly flavorful cup.

When I visited the Drink T website this morning, I could not locate this tea.  The package describes this tea as

This rare, black tea puts forward the noblest traits of Ceylon, bright coppery color with a medium body and slightly tart, refreshing taste.

Perhaps it is so rare that it is not currently in stock?  I don’t know.  But what I do know is that this is quite a complex Ceylon tea – clearly more complex than a standard Ceylon – and certainly worthy of a try.  I recommend checking with Drink T regularly and when it is available – get some!

This cup makes a lovely morning or afternoon tea when served hot – I added just a drizzle of agave nectar, but it is quite good without addition as well.  This one also takes milk well.  It also makes a really invigorating iced tea – I like it with a thin slice of lime!  The citrus really brings out some of the nuances of the fruit tastes in this tea.  Delightful!

Fruit Cocktail Green Tea from 52Teas

Fruit Cocktail Green Tea from 52TeasWhen I was growing up, fruit cocktail was a regularly served side dish along with dinner.  At least once a week, right along side the roast (or whatever “entree” my step-mother was serving that night), there would be a bowl of fruit cocktail.  And I liked fruit cocktail.

My favorite part of the fruit cocktail was the maraschino cherries.  Unfortunately, by the time the bowl of fruit cocktail made its way around to me, the cherries would have been long gone… one of my siblings had gone “cherry picking” and left me with the peaches, pears and pineapple.  Not that the peaches, pears and pineapple were all that bad, mind you.  They were still quite delicious.  But … they weren’t the cherries.

Because of my fondness for fruit cocktail, I was very excited about 52Teas’ green tea version.  And, fortunately Frank (Chief Zoomdweebie) was also quite fond of the cherries in fruit cocktail, because there is no shortage of cherry flavor in this cup!  In fact, the one fruit flavor that is very distinctive in this blend IS the cherry flavor.  And that brought a smile to my face the first time I tried it, because I finally got some cherry in my fruit cocktail!  Hooray!

The other fruit flavors are a bit less distinctive.  That is not to say that the flavors aren’t in the cup, because they are.  But, it is as though the peach, pear and pineapple have somehow melded into one “superfruit,” and their importance in the overall profile of the tea has been downplayed and allowed the cherry flavor to take the starring role.

This tea really tastes like someone had taken a can of fruit cocktail (heavy on the cherries) and put it in the blender and liquefied it.  And, while I can taste the green tea (and it is, in fact, quite strong in this tea as well), it is in perfect harmony with the fruit flavors.

The Chinese Sencha tea is perfect for this blend.  The buttery richness of the tea responds so well with the fruit flavors, that it somehow becomes part of the fruit cocktail.  The sweet, fresh, vegetative quality comes through very well and seems to become part of the fruit cocktail.

52Teas describes this blend as

My grandparents were part of that “Greatest Generation” of Americans. My grandfather served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he became an auto mechanic and opened his own garage. My grandmother was a registered nurse. In my recollection of her, I always thought she came from something of a well-to-do family, or she had aspirations to be a well-to-do family. (I can’t help but think about Hyacinth Bucket in the BBC comedy Keeping Up Appearances; my grandmother wasn’t that bad, but there was an element of Hyacinth in her).

Anyway, whenever the family got together at grandma’s house, she had these extravagant meals planned that frequently started with fruit cocktail. I can’t say why this fact has stuck in my memory more than others, but I remember the Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve dinners with fruit cocktails all around to start. I remember thinking it was like getting dessert before dinner.

So, in memory of my grandparents, here’s our delicious Chinese Sencha blended with real peach, pear, pineapple and natural peach, pear, pineapple and maraschino cherry flavors. It’s so delicious, you could serve it as a first course.

While this is a very good tea served hot, I think it’s even better iced.  This was one of my favorite teas over the course of the hot summer days.  My whole family loved it!  It was delicious unsweetened.  I love it with a slice of lemon or a sprig of mint!  YUMMY!

Soothing Chamomile – Mount of Olives Treasures

Soothing Chamomile from Mount of Olives TreasuresChamomile: one of the best ways to convince my Sweetheart it’s time for bed.  Mount of Olives is good for creating traditional teas with a twist.  This chamomile with pomegranate is a slightly sweet take on a sleepy tea.

These guys are individually packaged tea bags, making it a quick and easy alternative to loose chamomile, which has certainly proven to be a bit… messy.

Soothing Chamomile is a light and wispy bodied tea that tastes excellent with a teaspoon of honey and some cream because it brings out the subtle sweetness of ginger and licorice root.   Even after steeping longer than 10 minutes, the tea is very mellow and easy to drink.  Even my kids, who are wary of strong teas, really enjoyed this, especially when I added the honey.  *grin*

Remember to share your experience of the tea with the world as if they were sharing the tea with you!

Mount of Olives describes this tea as:

This delicious aromatic flavor both calms and comforts. Sweet-scented leaves of chamomile are blended with licorice, dandelion and ginger for a delicate flavor to relax the mind, body and soul. This unique combination of plants and herbs is specially created to gently ease digestion and can be enjoyed any time.

Ingredients: Verbena, chamomile, dandelion, licorice, ash tree, melissa, ginger, olive leaves, lemongrass, grape leaves, pomegranate leaves, hyssop

I really love sleep-inducing teas, and chamomile is absolutely a relaxing, calming tea.  I found myself going through the twenty bags in this box on exceptionally tiresome days because it was just so simple to drop a bag or two into my cup and pour the steaming water over it.  Often, I mix loose chamomile, but at the end of the day, my tea ball is covered in tiny bits of the flower, and it’s really stuck there.  Having a decent chamomile in a bag makes it really simple to enjoy without worrying about the mess I would end up with.

Lychee Tea from Sanctuary T

Lychee Tea from Sanctuary TI tasted this tea before I read the description of it on the Sanctuary T website (which is provided below), and when I did taste it, I noted that it tasted … just … a little different than other Lychee teas that I’ve tried.  I couldn’t pinpoint what it was that was different until I read the aforementioned description.

Grapefruit!  That is the difference.  And I must admit that it is a very good difference, indeed.  The grapefruit has a way of rounding out the pungent, sweet lychee flavor.  The flavor is less sweet, but not too tart.  Fruity – but in a way that is different from any other fruit flavored tea that I’ve tasted.  It’s quite lovely!

The black tea base is a smooth, brisk black tea.  It is not overly assertive and does not attempt to dominate the cup.  However, it doesn’t bow down and let the fruit flavor trample it, either.  It stands on its own and offers a very pleasing background flavor.

The lychee flavor tastes like… well, lychee.  That is, it tastes like the lychee flavor that I’ve become familiar with via the lychee teas that I’ve tasted.  But as I said previously, that is not all I taste.  The grapefruit is there too.  With the lychee, the grapefruit becomes a milder grapefruit – it isn’t tart or sour at all.  The fruit flavor is sweet, but not too sweet.  It is tart, but not too tart.  It is juicy, citrus-y, and delicious!

Sanctuary T describes this tea as

Lychee tea has a long history in China. Scented with the petals of the Chinese Lychee fruit, this tea is unique for its medium-sized whole black leaf.

Having tried several lychee flavored black teas, this is probably the best that I’ve tried.  It is delicious hot and it is also good iced – my daughters love this iced!  Fruity and refreshing!

Earl Grey from Mount of Olives Treasures

Earl Grey from Mount of Olives TreasuresLast Christmas, I decided that all I wanted was not my two front teeth, but simply heaping baskets of teas.  I didn’t need anything, and I had recently discovered my passion for the various delights of teas.  My family eagerly obliged me and this was one of the lovelies I received.

Hooray! One of my fall-back breakfast teas has always been Earl Grey.  Even better?  These were individually packaged for my convenience. And although fruity has never been high on my list of favorites, I was eager to try out this strange-sounding concoction.  Earl Grey plus pomegranate?  Hmmm.

After steeping for five minutes, the first thing I noticed was the dark mahogany colored liquor.  I was somewhat surprised by the scent, which was on the peppery side– YUM!   With traditional Earl Greys, I tend to add a little sugar and cream; however, for this unusual tea, I decided to go with it precisely as the manufacturer intended it.  Thankfully, I was pleased to discover that this tasty tea wasn’t overly fruity.  In fact, where I expected hints of bergamot, I found the subtle tartness of pomegranate.  There was no peppery flavor, as I had anticipated, but instead a light body of earthy, malty, and slightly lemony flavor.

Truthfully, this was nothing like traditional Earl Grey because I couldn’t detect even the slightest amount of bergamot, but it was still an easy to drink tea.

Mount of Olives Treasures describes this tea as:

Traditionally, Earl Grey is a blend of healthy black teas combined with natural bergamot oil known for its citrusy aroma and flavor. We have enhanced this traditional taste with a twist of lemon to leave you energized and refreshed.

Ingredients
Black tea, lemongrass, lemon peels, bergamot oil, lemon flavor, olive leaves, grape leaves, pomegranate leaves, hyssop.

One particular item to note about this tea:   Take care to not over-steep it!  If your water is too hot, or you leave your bag in the cup for too long, you absolutely will get a brassy taste.

Lemon, Honey & Chamomile by Boston Tea Co.

Lemon, Honey & Chamomile from The Boston Tea Co.The dry leaf of this tisane has a very nice aroma – the lemon and honey are prominent and smell soothing and uplifting, and I can also smell the distinctive scent of chamomile and osmanthus too.   It smells comforting yet intriguing – all at once.

The honey and lemon flavors are not only the most prominent scents but also the most prominent flavors of this cup.   I found this tea to be particularly nice when I was a little under the weather – it was not only soothing to my sore throat, but, it also helped me relax so that I could get the rest I needed to recuperate.

The chamomile is soft and mild-flavored in the presence of the lemon and honey, but it seems to also dull the brightness of the lemon just a little bit.  I personally would rather it didn’t do that… but it isn’t off-putting – it is just mildly disappointing, because when I think “lemon” I think bright – vibrant – zesty!  And this cup doesn’t quite deliver that bright punch of flavor.  But perhaps that isn’t the idea behind this tea.  It is, after all, an herbal blend – and maybe it’s meant to be soothing and relaxing, and not energizing.

The osmanthus is complemented perfectly with the honey flavor and gives this tea somewhat of a floral back note that is quite pleasant.  The green rooibos (my personal preference when it comes to rooibos) offers this blend a uniquely fresh flavor that is slightly woodsy, fruity and sweet.  The result is a vibrant yet calming cup of good health!

The Boston Tea Company describes this blend as

Taste the truth; naturally flavorful, this tea boasts the beauty of Mother Earth! Organic chamomile, organic lemon peel, organic osmanthus and organic honey flavor lend a wholesome, fragrantly soothing mix to our organic certified South African Green Rooibos.

Ingredients: Ingredients: Organic South African Green Rooibos, Organic Chamomile, Organic Lemon Peel, Organic Osmanthus, Organic Honey & Lemon Flavors

I prefer this tisane served hot without sweetener, as it has a light sweetness on its own.  It makes for a great late-night cuppa because it’s naturally caffeine-free, and chamomile is a natural remedy to promote restfulness.  Rooibos is also known to help with sleeplessness, so this is an ideal bedtime cup of tea!

Gen Mai Cha from Two Leaves and a Bud

Gen Mai Cha from Two Leaves and a BudThis is an amazingly light Gen Mai Cha – one of the lightest that I’ve ever tried.  As you will soon read, “light” will be the overall theme when it comes to this tea review.

The dry leaf is the first indication of the lightness of this tea – the aroma is quite faint compared to some Gen Mai Cha blends – which can sometimes be quite overwhelming.  This is beautiful – with a distant scent of toasty rice and a lovely grassy note.  It brews up to very pale, golden-green color.

The flavor is just as “golden” as the color.  It has a delicious, roasty-toasty flavor of the rice and the natural sweet, nutty taste that it imparts is delightful.

The green tea used in this blend is Sencha, and it has a pleasant vegetative quality to it.  It doesn’t taste grassy (or as grassy as the scent might lead one to believe), but more like steamed vegetables that have been buttered.  It is sweet and possesses a nice mouthfeel.  It’s not an incredibly thick mouthfeel, I would describe it more like the overall characteristic of this Gen Mai Cha – light but very pleasing.

Two Leaves and a Bud describes this blend as

Gen mai chai, or brown rice tea, is fresh green tea prepared with puffs of brown rice. Ours starts with great organic whole leaf sencha (sun-finished green tea) balanced by just enough organic roasted rice to give you that great toasty flavor.
Finish: Toasty
Caffeine: None   LIGHT   Moderate
Top note: Grassy
Middle Note: Smooth and nutty

Even though this is an incredibly light Gen Mai Cha, it does have a very well-rounded taste.  It is one of the most satisfying Gen Mai Cha teas that I’ve ever tasted because it is NOT overwhelming in any sense, just smooth, sweet, and delicious.

And even though it is light, it is one that would be incredibly refreshing as an iced tea too.  Today is an unseasonably hot day (usually, this time of year it’s usually cold and rainy), and I really enjoyed this tea chilled.  It was comforting and soothing, and yet, thirst-quenching.  Another stunning tea from Two Leaves and a Bud!
