[Persian Choice Royal Earl Grey from Alvin's]This is an Earl Grey with a lovely aroma that starts with the dry leaves. When I first opened the package, I was struck by how lemony the bergamot smelled. Many times, it’s hard to remember that bergamot is a citrus tree, but with this tea, one can easily imagine the whole citrus family. I think it’s because there’s less of a bitter note here than with some bergamot – this one is more like a sweet lemon, though there’s no actual sweetness. Anyway, I could have sniffed at the leaves all day. A better air freshener than anything they sell for your kitchen!

Upon brewing, the citrus aroma is joined by a slight bit of a floral aroma, surprisingly. Normally I don’t expect that in an Earl Grey, but I suppose that the blend of teas here – combining Assam and Darjeeling, like a good breakfast tea, plus some Ceylon tea – just happens to allow for new notes to develop as the tea steeps.

The taste is complex – the bergamot tastes more like bergamot, less like lemon, than it smells, but it still has that faint trace of a sweetness that isn’t added sugar, and a smoothness that goes with the floral part of the aroma. The black tea itself is quite strong, as one would expect from a blend with Assam in it, but it’s not at all harsh – it’s full-bodied, without being overpowering. Altogether, I think this is one of the best balances of tea flavor and bergamot flavor that I’ve ever tasted. It’s an Earl Grey I could drink breakfast through afternoon, and if I weren’t sensitive to caffeine at night, I’d drink it with dinner, too – the flavor of this tea would complement many dinner entrees as an added “sauce.” (I think that I am going to try cooking some rice with Indian spices and the sorts of seeds in a pilaf – fennel, in particular -  in water with this tea added – as I’m imagining the combination, it seems as though the flavors will combine wonderfully!)

The leaves of this tea are large and expand quite a bit on steeping – make sure you use a large enough infuser or paper tea sack.

If one doesn’t steep the tea the first time for too long, this tea is also good for a second steeping – use water slightly under boiling, and let it steep for somewhat longer, the second time, five minutes rather than three. There’s still a floral note, and though the flavor is milder, it’s still a superior taste.

And have I mentioned how beautiful the label is? The large flowers in the illustration of a royal woman drinking tea in her garden are a wonderful hint of the flavors to come.

All together, I can see why this is an award-winning tea, and based on the quality of this, I am eagerly looking forward to the next tea I try from Alvin’s!

Irish Breakfast from Twinings

[Twinings Irish Breakfast]I decided to try four teas that I didn’t buy myself. I rarely buy relatively “plain” teas myself, as I get served plain black tea in restaurants and in other people’s houses, and I receive lots of samples of black teas. This usually means, though, that I have only two or three cups’ worth of any particular tea, and often end up grabbing tea bags at random for my first cup of the morning, thus using up many of the loose tea bags people send me without even noticing what they are. Today, however, I made a conscious effort, and collected several bags each of several kinds of related teas that people have sent me, mostly things that are commonly available, and did a side-by-side test of them. I brewed them all identically, and tried one cup plain, one with a small amount of sugar, and one with milk.

This tea, Twining’s Irish Breakfast, was definitely the strongest of the four I tried today, which also included two English Breakfast teas and an “English Teatime.” If you are looking for a very bold cup of tea to get you going in the morning, and you want the convenience of a tea bag, this is a good choice! Twinings’ teas are commonly available, so you’d be able to get more anytime, if you decide that this is the tea that will be your morning habit.

Brewed plain, this tea has a dark color (darkest of any in this batch of 4) and a full-bodied taste with both hints of copper and a slightly malty note. I liked it very much, and I would say that despite it being in a tea bag, a traditional paper one, it brewed up as strong as loose tea in an infuser. When I tried a cup with sugar, the boldness of the tea was slightly intensified, but the coppery note was lost. I liked it better without the sugar. On the other hand, because of the strong flavor, this tea stood up the best to having milk added. I normally don’t drink milk with my tea – and there’s some evidence that adding milk to tea reduces the antioxidant benefits of tea – but if you do like milk in your tea but don’t want the tea flavor entirely quashed, then this is one that will hold up.

Unlike some tea afficianados, I don’t look down on tea bags -  I have had enough mediocre loose leaf teas, and seen enough infusers that somehow inhibit taste or add odd notes, that I can really appreciate the consistency and ease of preparation of tea bags, and I know that for many people, without this convenience factor, they wouldn’t prepare tea at all. So I do my best to get the word out when I find a particularly satisfying tea in bags. If you want a strong tea with no gimmicks, added flavors, or worries, then this is a very good example, and one that could become quite a habit for the morning tea cup.

Mango Ceylon from Republic of Tea


Mango Ceylon from Republic of TeaThis morning I enjoyed another perfect cup of tea from Republic of Tea.  This delightful little blend came to me as a single sample pack, but after an enjoyable first tasting I will be purchasing a full tin very soon!

Mango Ceylon comes neatly packaged in Republic of Tea’s round, natural, unbleached teabags.  The teabag itself smells of sweet, tangy mango.  Once brewed, the tea liquor actually smells slightly malty with a tiny hint of fruit.

This is a simple tea with three basic ingredients, one of them being sunflowers.  This tea was also effortless to prepare – use boiling water and steep for 3 minutes.  The brilliant tea blenders at Republic of Tea also created a decaffeinated version of this flavor, so it is just as suited to a nice evening cuppa before bed.

Republic of Tea describes this tea as:

This favored tea is light, sweet & intoxicating fragrant. Mango & sunflower blossoms are blended with superior Black tea leaves to produce an uplifting cup. A favorite retreat for coffee lovers. Wonderful served hot or over ice.

This tea certainly is uplifting!  The first taste is fruity with a nice, full body.  It has a pleasant astringency with a palatable malty finish.  I’ve found that it is best with a small amount of milk and sweetener, although too much milk lessens the beautiful mango flavor.  This tea is divine as a juicy morning wake-up cup.

I sure am fortunate that this was my random choice for the first cup of tea this morning.  It will leave you with a lingering cheerful note to carry you through the start of your day!

Don’t let the generic name of this tea deceive you.  This seemingly obvious blend comes alive with a variety of delightful flavors!  I apologize for  sounding like a flavor snob,  but the phrase ‘strawberry vanilla’ typically elicits from me a sigh of boredom and a ‘been there, done that’ attitude.  This usual reaction is exactly what occurred when the owner of Tin Roof Teas named the Strawberry Vanilla as one of the most popular green blends.  True to form, I didn’t even have a trace of a tea of this name on my carefully prepared list of teas to purchase.  However, after one whiff of the alluring aroma my disinterest began to waver.  My stance against this tea completely changed to curiosity after a quick glance at the dry leaves themselves.  This tea is truly a beautiful vision for the eyes, with good-sized pieces of gorgeous green leaves and chunks of dried strawberries.  After brewing, there are stems displayed among the full, wet leaves and the strawberry pieces darken to a beautiful red color.

I steeped this tea at the recommended temperature and time of 1.5 minutes and found it a touch too weak for my liking.  Brewing it for a full 2 minutes brought out much more of the charming flavor.   After experimenting, I also found that just a tiny drop of local honey is the perfect sweetener to accompany each subtle flavor hiding in this tea.

The liquor of Strawberry Vanilla itself is a perfectly bright, clear yellow.  The taste is very faint, with a light body.  After just one sip, the flavors fly about all at once, so it is a tea that requires several thoughtful sips to pin down the exact description of each ingredient that creates the exquisite tang.  The main taste is a slight strawberry flavor.  The hint of vanilla is very miniscule, almost like a wisp that darts in quickly and then flutters away again.  The aftertaste is most definitely vegetative; it almost suggests scenes of fresh-picked, overly ripe strawberries and sunshine.  Perhaps my imagination is on free rein after the surprising swell of flavor from this inconspicuous tea, but I daresay you will also share my visions after a cup of Strawberry Vanilla.

I couldn’t agree more, Tin Roof Teas!  This blend captivated me with its enchanting aroma, and I can foresee many relaxing, warm afternoons spent in the sunny company of this blend.  Bravo to this exquisite little tea for transforming the boorish image of ‘strawberry vanilla’ from a stereotype into a notable blend that will be a favorite again and again!

Earl Grey from St. Dalfour

This tea is amazing, capital A, capital M, capital.. well you get the idea right!?

I sit here on a cold winter’s night waiting an inevitable snow storm and I am sipping on something that warms me inside and out. I do not think a person can ever go wrong choosing an earl grey blend. It is just classic and will never go out of style. I only wish I had real lemons to squeeze in then my life would be complete.

St. Dalfour describes this tea as:

Kandy District Ceylon BOP from Upton Tea ImportsAs I took my first couple of sips of this tea, a word popped into my head.  That word:  Muchness.  I first heard this word used (at least to my recollection) in Alice in Wonderland (the 2010 film), when the Mad Hatter had told Alice that she had lost her “muchness.”

Well, this tea definitely has not lost its muchness.  It really took me by surprise.  It is rather bold for a Ceylon.  Generally, when I consider a Ceylon, I would automatically assume it would be a mild or meek black tea, but not this one.  This one has gusto.  It has muchness.

The tea is a brisk tea ith a pleasant fruit-like quality to it.  Like a citrus-y kind of fruit.  It is a tangy, astringent tea.  The astringency is somewhat drying and cleansing, leaving very little aftertaste.  What aftertaste it does permit is a light sweetness with a somewhat citrus fruit background note.

Upton Tea Imports describes this tea as

Good color and strength for a hearty cup. Takes milk very well.

This is a well-rounded, invigorating tea that is delicious served hot and makes a great breakfast tea.  It takes the additions of milk and honey very well, and I find that the milk tames that astringency just a bit so if you prefer less astringency, consider adding a drop of milk to the cup.  It is also a good choice for iced tea – excellent with a splash of lemon or lime!

Blueberry Tea from Adagio Teas


Blueberry Tea from Adagio TeasThis is probably the best non-custom-blend flavored black teas that I’ve tried from Adagio!  The flavor is bright and fruity, and the black tea base is very pleasant.  I am so thrilled that I had the chance to try this (thanks to a tea friend who sent it to me), I probably would never have given it the chance otherwise.  Horray for on-line tea friends!

Generally, I find Adagio Teas’ black tea base to be a bit too brassy for my liking, but, in this tea, I am not getting that harsh flavor.  It is brisk but not bitter, and has a moderate astringency to it.  While it is a strong black tea, I find it mellow in comparison to the other flavored black teas that I’ve tasted from Adagio.

The blueberry flavor is really delicious.  It’s a little sweet – almost like candied blueberries rather than fresh blueberries, but it is tasty regardless.  It has a hint of tartness to it, but I find it more sweet than tart, but I will say that the tartness does develop as I continue to sip.  It still never attains that “berry tingle” that I often experience with berry teas.  That’s neither good nor bad, it’s just what I’m experiencing with this cup.

Adagio Teas describes this tea as

A delightful blend of bright Ceylon black tea, fresh blueberry flavor and playfully accented with dried blueberries. An aromatic cup, definitely more like the ‘highbush’ variety of blueberry (highly fragrant and delicately tart). Fresh flavor, slightly sweet and rounded texture – not too juicy. Great hot or iced and easy to blend with other teas, too. Try it with Vanilla Black or Cream for added creamy texture.
Ingredients: black tea, natural blueberry flavor, raspberry leaves, blueberries

I really enjoyed this black tea.  It makes a stunning iced tea (and it’s turning out to be quite a hot summer, isn’t it?), but I also like it fine as a hot tea.  For a really special treat, I recommend trying it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a Blueberry Tea Float.  YUM!
