Full Moon at the Sands (Toasted Coconut Chai) from Gullah Girl Tea

  • Type Of leaves: Black Tea
  • Name Of Tea: Toasted Coconut Chai
  • Available From: Gullah Girl Tea

gullah girl

Charmaine sent me a few samples to review.  Before I begin to talk about the tea itself, let me first say a few words about the brand and presentation.  I was curious to know how Charmaine came up with the name Gullah Girl.  According to Wikipedia, the Gullah are descendants of slaves in South Carolina and Georgia.  Charmaine chose the name to honor her culture and her grandmother, whose herbal remedies inspired the teas Charmaine has created.  As you can see above, the samples came in adorable mini mason jars with a scrap of burlap.  Much more charming than the typical plastic resealable bags we see so often these days.  I’m already plotting ways to reuse mine!

I wanted to start with the one described as a toasted coconut chai, because well, let’s face it.  Who wouldn’t?

The dry tea itself looks like a typical black tea with bits of coconut, peppercorns, cloves, and cardamom.  It smells rich and spicy.   As this is a handcrafted tea, and carefully packaged in the mason jar so it doesn’t get crushed, there are none of the usual bits of “tea dust” in the jar.  I brewed this one at 212 for about three minutes.  I think I’d steep a bit longer next time.  I typically add skim milk that I’ve already microwaved to a chai, so I didn’t get to try this one plain.

Once brewed, flavors that stand out are cardamom and vanilla.  Ginger and clove are a bit more mild, but still come out to play in this delicious blend.  To be honest, I wasn’t sure that I tasted any coconut, but it may have been lost in the mix, especially with milk.  With milk, it is a medium bodied tea, bright and smooth.  She clearly used a high quality Assam tea base.  It made me feel like cuddling up in a warm blanket and reading a book by the fireplace.

Gullah Girl Tea describes this tea as:

The sands is a beach in Port Royal, South Carolina, where many people go to fish and once went to crab. It is also a place to go and revel in the stars and full moon a space for families and couples alike. Full Moon at the Sands is a twist on the original High Tide at the Sands, Fresh Chai.

Full Moon at the Sands is a deliciously spicy blend of fresh ginger, toasted coconut, Assam black tea, cinnamon, vanilla, cloves, peppercorns and cardamon in this warm spiced blend. This blend is perfect as you get cozy and warm and snuggle up to the ones you love. This blend is excellent warm with the milk of your choice and goes great as an iced tea as well.

There are a myriad of fine chais out there to experiment with, and this is certainly one of them!  While I didn’t think the coconut in this one was particularly pronounced, I still found it a delightful blend, and will enjoy sipping it this evening, and sharing it with my fiance, another chai enthusiast.  I can’t speak to the caffeine content just yet and don’t see mention of it on the website, but I would assume an Assam black would have medium caffeine content.

Gingerbread Black Tea by Simpson & Vail Inc.

When we think of the Christmas season, we are of course reminded of all the delicious treats that are served this time of year.  Simpson & Vail have put together this black tea blend that, as the name suggests, fits right into the holiday season with a favourite of many people: gingerbread! You can now indulge in the spiciness we have come to associate with gingerbread cookies but without all those added calories.

I thought this was quite a nice tea to look at – black tea leaves blended with bits of cinnamon, cloves and ginger. The aroma upon opening the package is spicy and exactly what you would expect with a gingerbread tea blend. The aroma is not over powering at all but what I would describe as pleasant.

Simpson & Vail have described this tea as follows:

When the weather turns chillier and the days are growing ever shorter, the smell of fresh baking gingerbread is just what you need to feel cozy and content. Winter is a great time. A time to snuggle in with good books, a time to enjoy the slopes or the skating rink, and a time to delight your senses with aromatic spicy goodies

Warm yourself from the inside out with this aromatic black tea blend. The brewed tea emits a heady, spicy aroma and the cup is perfectly proportioned. The flavors of gingerbread spices dance on your tongue, with no one spice overwhelming the others. Destined to be a spice lovers new favorite tea!

I most definitely agree that this tea is aromatic!  As I mentioned earlier, it is quite a pleasant, spicy scent without being overwhelming and it does remind me very much of spicy holiday cookies and other goodies. As someone who does love a good spicy tea, this is one I certainly did enjoy!

The taste is subtle and not overpowering at all. The black tea flavour balances well with the various spices and makes for a wonderful cup of tea. The addition of a tiny but of coconut sugar brought out the flavours of this tea although it is still quite pleasant to sip without the addition of a sweetener.

This is a great tea to share with your guests, to sip while doing some holiday baking or simply relaxing while reading a good book. It will warm you on a chilly winter afternoon and would be great to take along with you on a walk!

Coconut Kukicha Masala Chai from Yogic Chai

Coconut Kukicha Masala Chai from Yogic ChaiThis time of year, I love to curl up with a good cup of chai.  Typically, I drink my chai early in the day, because most chai blends are made with a strong, hefty black tea base with the gusto to get me going.  But, what about later in the day, when I want something a little less invigorating but still want that warm, comforting flavor of the spices?

Coconut Kukicha Chai to the rescue!  Yogic Chai makes some of the very best chai blends that I’ve tasted, and this Coconut Kukicha Chai is no exception.  It’s delicious.

The kukicha is a lighter tea than the typical black tea that is usually used in traditional chai, and it has less caffeine than other tea types, making it a good choice for tea drinking later in the day.  And I love the addition of the coconut, because it adds a sweet, creamy taste to the cup – giving it a latte kind of feel without milk.

Yogic Chai’s masala spice base is comprised of cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and ginger.  That’s it.  Nothing fancy or excessive.  But apparently these four ingredients are all you need because Yogic Chai has the perfect balance of flavor and warm spice.  Everything is very harmonious without being too spicy.  It’s just warm and comforting.  A cozy cup of chai!

Here is Yogic Chai’s description of this blend:

Herbal Properties:

- Kukicha Tea: Popular among the macrobiotic community. Kukicha is a powerful antioxidant* and is very low in caffeine, in fact the lowest in caffeine of all traditional teas.

- Cardamom: A household spice that is commonly used to support digestion without increasing Heat.* It has expectorant and diaphoretic actions. (sweat inducing)* The mucus forming properties of milk are neutralized when cardamom is added to it.*

- Cinnamon: This warming spice is traditionally used in cold formulas as an expectorant and diaphoretic (sweat inducing).* Due to its warming property, cinnamon is known to promote digestion.*

- Cloves: An energizing herb,* cloves are an effective stimulant and aromatic for the lungs and stomach.* Cloves are used extensively in Ayurvedic herbology.

- Ginger: In Ayurvedic and Chinese herbology, Ginger is known to have heating, cleansing, toning and stimulating properties.* Ginger promotes digestion, relieves abdominal discomfort, dispels chills and it is also useful for relieving respiratory complaints due to phlegm and arthritic conditions due to coldness.*

- Coconut: Coconut, says vaidya Mishra, Director of Maharishi Ayurveda’s Product Research and Development, is considered a divine plant in vedic tradition. Whenever you perform a sacred ceremony like a yagna, havan or puja, a coconut must grace the occasion.

* This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

This is a deliciously different chai, and I’m loving it.  It has so much that I want from a chai latte – it is sweet, creamy and warmly spiced; but it is a lighter version of what I would drink first thing in the morning.  This is my late afternoon chai for those chilly winter days … and we still have quite a few ahead of us!

Hazelnut Chai from Twinings

Twinings Hazelnut ChaiTwinings has quite a few flavors of chai currently available. This one presents the traditional foursome of chai spices – cinnamom, cardamom, cloves and ginger – along with a strong hazelnut flavor which is very warm and soothing. The chai spices themselves don’t taste quite as strong as they do in some of the other chai flavors, not because they aren’t as strong, but simply because the hazelnut flavor is stronger.  If you wanted a chai strictly for the spiciness, I’d say go for Twinings’ Ultra Spice  Chai, but if you want a mellower flavor, then this offers a possibility.

Twinings says about this tea:

For over 300 years, Twinings has been sourcing and blending the finest, high-quality teas from around the globe to ensure that your tea has the perfect balance of tea taste, flavour and aroma. Twinings blends to perfection the finest black teas with the sweet and savoury spice flavours of cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and ginger to give you a line of great-tasting Chai teas with a bold, spicy taste and rich, vibrant aroma. Ingredients: Black Tea, Natural Chai, Cinnamon & Ginger Flavours With Other Natural Flavours, Cardamom, Clove, Artificial Hazelnut Flavour. This product does not contain nuts or nut derivatives.

Did you notice that this contains no nuts? That’s right, if you’re allergic to nuts, you can still enjoy the taste of nuts by drinking this tea!

Because the hazelnut flavor is strong, I don’t recommend using hazelnut milk or almond milk in this tea, if you’re adding milk – that would make it so overwhelming that you wouldn’t be able to taste the tea or spices at all. Use some dairy milk instead, for balance. Milk and sugar are traditional additions to chai, but go easy on them here – the hazelnut flavor already adds a feeling of sweetness.

Winter Spice from Twinings

Winter Spice from TwiningsThis is a very apple-y tea! Chamomile and apple are a great natural pair. (Did you know that the Spanish word for apple is manzana, and Spanish for chamomile is manzanilla, little apple?) Combining the two with spices traditionally associated with apples makes for a taste much like spiced cider. Fewer calories than spiced cider, too! (Though probably also somewhat fewer vitamins.) It’s a great combination for late evenings in the winter, times when you’d think of a mug of mulled cider but don’t want to ingest anything too acidic late at night.

Since this tisane is in the convenient form of tea bags, it’s also easy to make late at night, when you might not want to fiddle with infusers and teapots, or with making up a cheesecloth bag of mulling spices for your cider. (It occurs to me, though I haven’t tried it, that you could probably make a quick version of mulled cider simply by steeping this teabag in heated apple juice instead of water, if you wanted to and didn’t happen to have pre-made bags of mulling spices…)

Twinings says about this tea:

Warm up with this expertly blended natural chamomile herbal tea reminiscent of a hot cup of spiced cider. The crisp flavor of apple is complemented by the sweet character of cinnamon and aromatic cardamom and clove.

Ingredients: Chamomile, Natural Apple Flavour with Other Natural Flavours, Cinnamon, Cardamom, Clove

Our regular readers know I’m a sucker for cardamom in any form, but really, I think it’s objective fact, not just my opinion, that cardamom accentuates the sweetness of apples better than any other spice!

Glitter & Gold from David’s Tea

Glitter & Gold from David's TeaTo confess, I basically tried this tea on a whim. I usually pass on flavored teas, especially ones that seem gimmicky, but when I noticed a tea that has little gold balls and sugar crystals, I just couldn’t resist.  It looked like such fun! It’s also the holiday season, after all. After trying this tea, I could see myself grabbing it any time of year, for a little bit of gold glamour.

The leaves are a treat to look at- Chinese black tea with sugar crystals and gold sugar balls. This tea is extremely festive! The leaves have a strong smell of cinnamon and orange, along with the earthy scent of the tea. The aroma evokes the feeling of warming by a cozy fire.

After steeping, the tea actually sparkled! Little gold flecks happily float around the brew. OK, perhaps this is not a trait I usually look for in tea, but I love it. It has a spicy warm cinnamon flavor with an orange finish. I also detect some vanilla, but it’s not listed in the ingredients. Cloves are also listed, but they didn’t come through for me. However, I imagine they add to the warming effect.  The brew is smooth and satisfying. This tea would take well to milk, and would be great as a latte.

David’s Tea describes this tea as:

This deep dark Chinese tea is like a gorgeous starry night, glimmering with gold and silver sugar crystals that shimmer as they steep. Take a sip and the slow suggestion of cinnamon will warm your body. Your toes will tingle and your mind will turn to fireworks, falling stars, late-night seduction. It’s basically magic. (Is it getting hot in here, or is it just the tea?)

Glitter & Gold is absolutely perfect for the holidays. The smooth, warm taste is perfect for the chilly weather, and the glitter puts a bit of joy into your cup. It’s great for sharing during a festive gathering, or when you need a little lift after doing all of those holiday errands. Or really, any time of year to bring a little shine into your day. I’ve fallen for this glittery, joyful tea.

Ultra Spice Chai from Twinings

Ultra Spice Chai from TwiningsMmmmm, spicy. Definitely spicier than most other bagged chai teas from the mass market companies. Now, I have had spicier chai – but that’s partly because I’ve had friends bring back chai from India for me, and I’ve had loose leaf chai with fresh spices ground into it (including black pepper!) – but short of those experiences, most of us have relatively mild chai.

If you’ve been wanting something with more assertive spices and the convenience of being in tea bags, and also the convenience of being available at most supermarkets, we have a winner!

There’s lots more cardamom in this chai than in the other chais I’ve reviewed recently, and more cloves, and, well, more of everything. I love cardamom – I don’t think a lot of Americans appreciate cardamom enough. I made my Thanksgiving sweet potatoes with butter, brown sugar, fresh grated ginger root, and ground cardamom, and they were a definite hit, the first thing everyone finished. Try adding cardamom to any recipe that calls for cloves – add just a pinch of cardamom as well. Oh, wait, I’m wandering away from the topic. Tea, that’s right – a chai tea that actually has enough cardamom for my tastes.

Here’s what Twinings says about this tea:

The finest black tea expertly blended with the more of the sweet and savory spice flavors of cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and ginger to deliver a robust tea with a rich, vibrant aroma and bold, spice taste.

Ingredients: Black Tea, Natural Chai, Cinnamon & Ginger Flavours with Other Natural Flavours, Cardamom, Clove

Most chai calls for some sweetener and milk. This one’s strong enough that dairy milk works well with it – usually, I use almond milk when I add milk at all, and I know a lot of people favor the plant milks, but if you’ve just been waiting for something worth adding whole milk to, or even cream, this tea is spicy enough to taste great with those options.
