Earl Grey from Tea Story

earl-grey

Today’s review is for one of my personal favourites.

This is Earl Grey Black Tea from Tea Story.

This is the first time I have tried Tea Story’s Earl Grey so I am really looking forward to it after having sampled some of their other blends.

Tea Story advise that you leave the teabag to steep for 2-3 minutes and that this particular blend is high in caffeine.

I prepare my kettle for boiling and as with most fine black teas I take my trusty china cup from the cupboard.

My kettle has now boiled so I pour the hot liquid over the bag and let the water infuse. The liquid instantly turns golden brown in colour and gives off the most amazing orangey scent.

I just have to mention again that I love Earl Grey.

After 3 minutes I take a sip of the tea (without milk or sugar) and get the most beautiful taste of exquisite black tea with a hint of bergamot. My brew is simply divine!

This tea is perfect from when you want something that little bit more special (personally I could drink it all day long).

Tea Story describes this tea as-

Box consists of 16 individually wrapped pyramids.

The most fragrant black tea, this traditional english brew is made from fine, whole-leaf black tea. The delicious taste and pleasing aroma stem from it being sensitively enhanced with citrusy bergamot. We recommend steeping it for 3 minutes and lightly sweetening it. A tip from gourmets: the tea becomes even more distinctive by adding a drop of milk.

high caffeine

Brewing Instructions: 1 pyramid per cup, 3-4 min, 100 °C

Overall I would describe this tea as delicate yet full flavoured and a real taste sensation. Thank You Tea Story!

Posh Earl Grey from LuLin Teas

posh_earl_grey_380x380Good Morning tea-lovers!

Today I am going to review this delightful looking tea from LuLin Teas.

Here we have their Posh Earl Grey Blend and I must say I think it looks rather special.

This tea is a blend of English Earl Grey with the addition of bright blue corn flowers and as they say “zesty orange flowers to create a wonderful posh earl grey blend”.

I think you will agree that the colours look beautiful.

On my instructions given for brewing they state that I need to add 3g of tea to a tea pot and steep with boiling water. I am told to let the tea infuse for 3-5 minutes according to my taste and that the tea can be re-steeped.

I prepare my kettle to boil and take my tea pot out of the cupboard. I then place the recommended amount into the tea pot and wait for the kettle to boil.

I feel excitement building as I haven’t yet tried a light tea that has flowers in it.

I pour my water into my tea pot and let everything infuse until I feel that I cant wait any longer!

5 minutes have now passed and I am very eager to try this blend.

Upon tasting I can smell a lovely orange/bergamot aroma which smells refreshing (not too perfumed like some teas can be).

I take a sip and well what can I say apart from wow!

This tea is something of  delight, its fresh, light and very tea-like (I’m sure you will know what I mean by this).

The taste of orange and bergamot come through lovely and leave me feeling refreshed and calm. I must say I feel this tea would be lovely mid morning as a treat and I feel it would be perfect for afternoon tea with some light food shared with friends.

LuLin Teas describe this tea as-

We’ve taken a Sri Lankan black tea, LuLin Teas Single Estate Keemun black tea, bergamot oil, orange flowers & cornflowers and created an Earl Grey fit for Earl Grey himself (2nd Earl Grey, a British Prime Minister received a gift of Black tea flavoured with Bergamot Oil in 1803 and we haven’t looked back since). When you first drink this tea you are present with the aromatic aroma of the bergamot, then the full flavour of the fragrant black teas, and third the zesty orange notes come through. It lingers on the palate with a combination of all of the favours. Only available in refill pouches at this time.

Overall I personally would give this tea 10 out of 10 for freshness, taste and aroma. A delicate tea suitable for anytime! Thank you LuLin Teas.

Lady Londonderry from English Tea Store

Lady Londonderry from English Tea Store

This is the smoothest black tea I have ever had! Absolutely no astringency whatsoever! I really love this tea and this was unexpected to me as I went in with cynicism. Let me explain. When I began my loose leaf tea journey not that long ago, I made quite a hefty purchase from English Tea Store. They have reasonable prices, an amazing selection, great reviews, and they had a cute teapot I wanted and needed for a very fair price. So I went for it and got a ton of black teas.

Later I discovered I preferred greens, and oolongs. So my black teas sat around a little while as I learned more about other types of tea. Now I am back to my black tea discoveries. Also I want to say I was a heavy coffee drinker so one would think I would favor black tea but for me this was just not the case. Regardless, I have all of this black tea that is either going to be enjoyed by me, or passed onto some trade partners who I feel will appreciate it more.

So back to Lady Londonderry: This tea has a mouthfeel of a weak coffee, but I must say that I typically drink very dark, robust, rich coffee so to most this tea would be the same mouthful of a typical coffee, or what I call diner coffee. The liquor is medium brown and if you tilt your cup toward sunlight you can still see the sides or bottom of your cup if drinking from a more shallow tea cup. In a coffee mug it would look deeper and darker.

What English Tea Store says about Lady Londonderry:

Our Lady Londonderry Tea is a delightful afternoon tea with a malty floral flavor and hints of strawberry and lemon. This tea is made from black tea, dried orange, daisy white and natural flavors. Use it for hot or iced tea. Either way, your family and guests will feel like royalty!

There is a light floral flavor but also a sweet berry citrus flavor within it. I see this tea as the ultimate tea for an English tea party! This is the tea I envision Alice and the Mad Hatter sitting around sipping with friends! Sweet, like Alice, a little malty and nutty like the Mad Hatter, and floral and twisting like the Technicolor surroundings the would have about them!

There is no bitterness in this tea even though there are flavors such as orange and lemon they are so wonderfully sweetened by the sugary strawberry and balanced delicately by the daisy. I am still simply sitting here in awe of how much I do love this black tea! If you could have seen me as I weeded through my black tea selection which is quite large in comparison to the teas I so covet, you would have been able to tell by my expression, something of a turned up nose, and smushed ick face, that I was by no means ready to be impressed by any black tea in my stash!

Now recently I did order some amazing black tea from another vendor that is well-known for having the best of the best teas and well I hate to think of myself as a tea snob, thinking a tea can only be amazing if it comes from specific sources or has a specific price tag attached to it but to my credit, I have had some bad luck with black tea over all as my palate just does not agree with black tea in general.

My meandering point is that this tea is that amazing and I mean come on, at only $13.55 a pound its like black gold only really inexpensive high quality gold. Yeah I sort of twisted up that comparison I know.

As the tea cools there is this almost creamy quality to it – this tea just keeps delighting and surprising with every sip! Yes another tea to add to my permanent collection and a black tea to boot! This brings my permanent black tea collection up to three teas. I am that picky about black tea! You see I have my samples which are abundant, then I have some teas I have ordered because they are very good and I like them.

Then I have what I consider my “stash” to me, the stash are the teas I can’t live without, would want in case of Armageddon, NEED to have at all times.  They are few, they are precious, they are always on hand! This tea has risen to those ranks! Now if only I can get myself invited to have tea with Alice!

Joie de Vivre Herbal from Teavana

Joie de Vivre Herbal from TeavanaThis is one of my favorites.  I often walk to my tea cabinet just to smell this blend.  The second my tin is open, my mouth waters!  The tea smells so sweet, that it’s like a snack.  The tea consists of large pieces of fruit that remind me of a fresh fruit trail mix.

The smell of the tea is similar to fruit salad.  You can really smell the sweetness of the peach and apple.  The ingredients are: peach pieces (with separating agent rice flour), grapes, apple pieces, fig slices, candied peach pieces (peach, sugar), flavoring (peach, grape, vanilla, pepper), plum pieces (with separating agent rice flour), apple slices, pepper, vanilla pieces, orange pieces.  The tea is so fresh that the pieces are still moist!

I steeped this tea in my little cup infuser with boiling water for 6 minutes.  I used 2 tsp of tea to 10 oz of water and added 1 tsp of German Rock Sugar.  The color of the liquid is a beautiful golden-yellow.  Some of the flavors sink to the bottom so it’s important to swirl before you sip – like a fine wine!  Although overall, I would describe this tea is fairly mild, it packs a LOT of fruit flavor.

Teavana describes this tea as:

A toast to ‘the good life,’ joy and celebration abound with each sip of this ‘champagne’ of herbal teas. Sip the delicate pale yellow liquor with golden highlights of sweet white peaches, candied lemon, regal figs and a creamy Madagascar vanilla ending. A seamless blend of happiness in a cup. Sweet peach and grape with lingering citrus & a hint of white pepper and vanilla.

The taste is just heaven to me.  I can definitely taste the peach and there is a little kick at the end which must be the vanilla and citrus.  It’s hard to pinpoint the most prominent flavor since there are so many mellow fruits in this blend.

This is such a sweet blend of perfection great for bedtime!

Acai Matetini from Teavana

Acai Matetini from TeavanaThis is one of the boldest and flavorful teas I have ever tried.  I was automatically drawn to the tea just based on the fact that it is a Mate which has 100% of the caffeine as coffee.  I am always looking that morning kick in the pants that I need!

Although most of the teas that I review, I have sipped before, I try not to review the ingredients before I sit down to write so I can really talk about the flavors.   The tea has so many ingredients that it’s almost difficult to pinpoint the base flavor!  Ingredients include: apple, candied pineapple (pineapple, sugar) hibiscus, rosehip, elderberries, maté, blueberries, blackberries, pineapple chips, citrus slices, apple slices (apple, citrus acid), flavoring (blueberry, pineapple, lemon, lime, peppermint), raspberries, cornflower, spearmint, lemon grass, sunflower petals, acai fruit powder (acai, maltodextrin). I can compare this tea to a juice since it is so strong.  The tea itself is as colorful and scented as potpourri (but not in a bad way).

I steeped the tea in my little infuser for 6 minutes using boiling water.  I used 1.5 tsp of tea (less would probably suit most), I added 1 heaping tsp of German Rock Sugar to counteract the tartness in the tea.  Although Teavana’s description (see below) describes this tea more as a sweet/crisp tea, I find it pleasingly tart.

Teavana describes this tea as:

The newest craze in cocktails inspired this fusion of real fruit, herbs and flowers with mate tea. Our mock martini is a classy notch up, first blending ‘superfruits’ acai, blueberry, raspberry and blackberry. Added to that are crisp granny smith apples & sweet pineapple, brightened with the zesty citrus notes of orange, lemongrass and hibiscus. Cheers! SUPERFRUIT ENHANCED.  Crisp and sweet berries, followed by sweet pineapple and finished with minty undertones.

The color of the tea is a dark burgundy liquid.  You can even smell this tea – which I find unusual.  The liquid is a medley of flavors exploding on my tongue.  The only thing I can really taste upon finish is the peppermint.  It is not overpowering, and I did have to read the ingredients to put my finger on the flavor, but it’s there.

I haven’t tried this tea chilled, but I am certain it would be amazing on a hot summer day served over ice with a lemon wedge (feet in sand would be a bonus).  A definite must try for those of you that love a robust tea.

Caribbean Calypso Mate from Teavana

Caribbean Calypso Mate from TeavanaCaribbean Calypso Mate is a pleasing blend of tropical flavors such as coconut and pineapple.  The dried tea looks more like a trail mix than a tea!  The pieces of coconut and mango are so large that it is tempting to eat it right from the tin.  I steeped this tea in my teamaker using 208 degree water for 6 minutes.  I added 1 tsp of German Rock Sugar to each 8 oz of water.

The steeped tea is a soft yellow color and it smells delicious.  The taste reminds me more of an herbal than a maté, since the tropical flavors are so prominent in the tea.  This tea makes a great iced tea!

Teavana describes this tea as:

Steel pan drums come to a pina colada crescendo on this island paradise of fruit and mate. The Caribbean’s flair is captured with juicy sweet mango, pineapple and red delicious apples added to toasted coconut and zesty lemongrass. Refreshing and delicious served hot or chilling over cubes of cold ice. SUPERFRUIT ENHANCED CONTAINS NUTS.

Light and zesty mango, pineapple, and toasted coconut.  Ingredients: Lemongrass, coconut chips, candied mango pieces (mango, sugar), candied pineapple pieces (pineapple, sugar), apple pieces, green yerba maté, ginger slices, bamboo leaves, flavoring (pineapple, banana), apple slices, lemon myrtle, orange juice bits.

Initially, I bought this tea for that morning kick that a good maté provides, but it is a little too sweet for the morning.  I enjoy it more in the afternoon.  It is such a sweet blend that it will satisfy a craving for something sweet!
