Peppermint and licorice from Pukka

Good Morning tea-lovers!

I stumbled across this in my local herbal store and thought I just needed to try it.

This is Peppermint & Licorice organic herbal tea from Pukka.

I have tried Pukka’s teas in the past but this one really caught my eye with its jazzy packaging and I particularly like the idea of the flavour combination.

I love peppermint tea and I love licorice so whats not to like?

I prepare my kettle for boiling.

This tea is in bagged form so its very handy for carrying around for when you need a pick-me-up!

My kettle has now boiled so I pour the hot liquid over the bag in my cup and wait for the flavours to mingle together.

On the Pukka website it states that the tea should be left to infuse for 5 minutes.

After a couple of minutes the liquid is dark in colour and has a slight golden hue to it.

I cannot fully explain how lovely the smells are in the area that I am doing the tasting.

This tea smells absolutely delicious!

Pukka describes this tea as-

Lemon Lavender Herbal from Tea Embassy

Lemon Lavender Herbal from Tea EmbassyAn intensely flavored herbal tea!  I LOVE a full flavored herbal and this tea hits the spot!  The dried leaves are a pretty blend of organically grown lavender, orange peel, lemongrass, lemon myrtle and peppermint.

It is such a soft tea that it makes me want to run it through my fingers.  I ordered 1 oz and it is such a light blend, it came in 2 foil bags!  The tea smells amazing.  The lavender is the main scent, but you can smell the citrus and the peppermint at the end.

I used 1 tsp of tea to 8 oz of water and steeped for 6 minutes at 212°F.  I added just a touch of Agave Syrup to sweeten it just a bit.  The color of the tea is a soft yellow.

Tea Embassy describes this tea as:

Soothing, calming and delicious! This naturally caffeine free blend of organically grown herbs has a heavenly melange of lavender, peppermint, lemongrass, orange peel and lemon myrtle.

The flavor is definitely a floral/lavender base with citrus undertones and a peppermint finish.  I find the blend of flavors very unique.  I love this tea alone, but it is speaking to me that next time I may just add a touch of jasmine tea to it.

This is a great bedtime tea, although with the citrus it would also make a great iced tea for a hot summer day.

Acai Matetini from Teavana

Acai Matetini from TeavanaThis is one of the boldest and flavorful teas I have ever tried.  I was automatically drawn to the tea just based on the fact that it is a Mate which has 100% of the caffeine as coffee.  I am always looking that morning kick in the pants that I need!

Although most of the teas that I review, I have sipped before, I try not to review the ingredients before I sit down to write so I can really talk about the flavors.   The tea has so many ingredients that it’s almost difficult to pinpoint the base flavor!  Ingredients include: apple, candied pineapple (pineapple, sugar) hibiscus, rosehip, elderberries, maté, blueberries, blackberries, pineapple chips, citrus slices, apple slices (apple, citrus acid), flavoring (blueberry, pineapple, lemon, lime, peppermint), raspberries, cornflower, spearmint, lemon grass, sunflower petals, acai fruit powder (acai, maltodextrin). I can compare this tea to a juice since it is so strong.  The tea itself is as colorful and scented as potpourri (but not in a bad way).

I steeped the tea in my little infuser for 6 minutes using boiling water.  I used 1.5 tsp of tea (less would probably suit most), I added 1 heaping tsp of German Rock Sugar to counteract the tartness in the tea.  Although Teavana’s description (see below) describes this tea more as a sweet/crisp tea, I find it pleasingly tart.

Teavana describes this tea as:

The newest craze in cocktails inspired this fusion of real fruit, herbs and flowers with mate tea. Our mock martini is a classy notch up, first blending ‘superfruits’ acai, blueberry, raspberry and blackberry. Added to that are crisp granny smith apples & sweet pineapple, brightened with the zesty citrus notes of orange, lemongrass and hibiscus. Cheers! SUPERFRUIT ENHANCED.  Crisp and sweet berries, followed by sweet pineapple and finished with minty undertones.

The color of the tea is a dark burgundy liquid.  You can even smell this tea – which I find unusual.  The liquid is a medley of flavors exploding on my tongue.  The only thing I can really taste upon finish is the peppermint.  It is not overpowering, and I did have to read the ingredients to put my finger on the flavor, but it’s there.

I haven’t tried this tea chilled, but I am certain it would be amazing on a hot summer day served over ice with a lemon wedge (feet in sand would be a bonus).  A definite must try for those of you that love a robust tea.

New Sensation from Hari Tea

New Sensation from Hari TeaOf all the teas I have sampled from Hari Tea, all are beautiful and delicious teas, but I chose this tea to review first because it was the most surprising tea I had the honor of sampling from Hari Tea.

The title of the tea is ‘New Sensation’ and is part of Hari Teas’  Inspirational Line of Teas.   The first thing that truly impresses me about this tea is its packaging.  It comes packaged in a beautiful embossed cardboard box, and inside is a cellophane containing the tea bags, which is tied with the most adorable little twine bow.

Once you until the twine bow from the cellophane, the tea bags are what are truly incredible, and indeed unique to the tea industry!   This tea is packaged in individual teabags which are made from pure cotton teabags.  Each cotton teabag has fairly nice sized holes for brewing, and has a pure cotton string, which is carefully sewed onto the small paper tag which includes complete brewing instructions and information on the tea and Hari Tea’s information as well.   In short these are wonderfully eco-friendly teabags which are impressive to look at and makes your tea experience much more exceptional!

Hari Tea describes this tea as:

What adult doesn’t look back and wistfully remember a time when he or she had more plentiful energy? We spend enormous amounts of time and money trying to satisfy the longing for the feeling of newness – eagerness to take on life with no thought of limitation. we love the old feeling of a new sensation. And we certainly lover the refreshing taste of hibiscus and mint.

At the bottom of the front of the package it says Hibiscus and Mint.  This was the reason the tea was so uniquely surprising to me, because I didn’t even open it for two weeks.   Tea Companies of the World, please take note:  Hibiscus is yucky.  We know it’s a cheap filler, we know it’s in almost every fruit blend in the world, but seriously, it’s bitter, it’s tart, and it has no place in tea.  In my own humble opinion, the use of hibiscus in tea should be discontinued, period.

So when I initially decided to give it a try, I was hesitant because of my dislike for hibiscus.   And of course the hibiscus was present, when you put hibiscus into a blend it’s extremely difficult not to be able to pick it out among the flavors.  However it was when I read the other ingredients listed on the side of the package that I decided this was worth a try, and I’m very glad I did!

The ingredients are:

Hibiscus (21%), fennel, rosehips, spearmint (7%), peppermint (7%), cinnamon, green rooibos, apple, roasted chicory, blackberry leaf, black pepper, ginseng extract, coconut, turmeric root and rose petals.

WOW.  That is quite the mélange of ingredients and flavors.  After looking at the ingredients and tasting the tea, I honestly think the combination of hibiscus and rosehips (flavors which are very similar, tart and bitter) was too much of a tartness, and could be removed completely from the ingredients and you would have an exceptional and unique tea.  If it were me, I would replace hibiscus and rosehips with either lemon or lemon zest and lemongrass, or to a lime flavor.  Lime and Mint or Lemon Mint would be better than Hibiscus and Mint.

However with that being said, and the long list of ingredients and flavors, the flavor of this tea completely surprises me.  Yes it has a tartness that is easily identified as hibiscus and rosehips, but this tea goes much deeper than that and is remarkably smooth without any hint of bitterness, which is very surprising.  You can taste a slight licorice flavor from the fennel, and the mints are definitely present and delicious.  I would like to taste more of the chicory and the coconut in this as I felt they were good flavor inclusions in the ingredients list but they didn’t really stand out in the overall flavor profile.

This tea is indeed very refreshing whether you take it hot or iced.  This does make an exceptional iced tea, and I prefer to add sweetener to this one although it can be taken with or without sugar.  Don’t add milk or creamers to this one, it would clash horribly with the tartness of the hibiscus and the mint flavors.  The aim of this tea is to inspire and to refresh with a ‘new sensation’ and I think they have definitely achieved that goal.   In fact this is possibly one of the very few teas which include hibiscus and rosehips as ingredients that I would not only enjoy drinking but would drink on a regular basis.

Refreshing, invigorating, and great for any time of day or night!

Weight To Go Pu-Erh from Teavana

Weight To Go Pu-Erh from TeavanaThis is another beautifully blended strawberry tea from Teavana.  As I work through my tea collection, I am astonished at how many strawberry teas I have!  One sniff and you will also be in love.  The scent of the strawberries is very strong.  It reminds me of the smell of a strawberry cake baking.  It is also a very pretty blend with lots of color.

I used 1 tsp of tea to each 8 oz of water and steeped for 4 minutes at 195°F.  I sweetened it with 1 tsp of German Rock Sugar for each 8 oz of tea.  I would recommend trying it without sweetener first since it is naturally a sweet tea, but I like mine extra sweet!  The color of this brewed tea is a golden chocolate-brown.

Teavana describes this tea as:

Enticing, tantalizing and truly energizing this rosy blush blend of pu-erh black and green oolong teas merge to create an intoxicating mix of sweet fruit with bright mint. Sweet strawberries and golden delicious apples swirl into peppermint and spearmint and create guilt-free, slimful beauty inside and out. SUPERFRUIT ENHANCED.

Ingredients: Pu-erh tea, oolong tea, rosehip peels, apple pieces, strawberry pieces, hibiscus flowers, rose petals, spearmint, beetroot pieces, peppermint, strawberry flavoring

Complex flavors of strawberry, apple and hibiscus are followed by refreshing mint.

The taste is definitely more of a fruity blend than a black – it is very smooth.  The ingredients indicate both spearmint and peppermint, but until I read that, I actually didn’t even notice since they are so subtle.  I have enjoyed this tea both hot and cold.  The wonderful thing about this tea is that it will satisfy your sweet tooth!

A wonderfully smooth pu-erh blend with a fresh strawberry taste.

Amoré from Persimmon Tree Tea

Amore from Persimmon Tree TeaThis is a gorgeously romantic and refreshing minty floral tea which delights the palate and the senses.  A truly fine white tea base forms the beginning of this blend, and the white tea is silvery white whole curled tippy leaves with a soft fine downy feel to them, indicative of their high quality and freshness.

The white tea leaves a refreshing, smooth and soft tea flavor that is the star of this show.  However, the organic peppermint and wild roses are also very prominent in this blend.  The white tea, mint and rose flavors are all the best quality and have a delicious flavor that is well-balanced in this tea, leaving no flavor dominating, but all flavors present and forming a mouth-watering overall minty floral white tea.

The Persimmon Tree Tea Company describes this tea as:

A beautiful blend of organic flower-scented white loose-leaf teas, wild roses, organic peppermint and seasonally selected botanicals.

Its refreshing and aromatic qualities make it great for an after meal pick-up, or for sipping in the evening with someone you love.

Persimmon Tree Tea indicates that there are also “seasonally selected botanicals” in this blend, which I can’t pinpoint what those are, but they are what makes this tea much more than just a refreshing blend of white teas, roses and peppermint.  It has a very unique and soothing flavor and aroma.

In fact the aroma of the leaves (both dried and brewed – more so brewed) are so aromatic I daresay these teas are a form of aromatherapy as well, because they relax and help you to unwind.  As this is a white tea with a lot of relaxing herbals in it, it has a very low amount of caffeine in it, much less than a normal cup of black tea, so this tea is not only a zesty wakeup in the morning, but also a soothing aromatic bedtime tea.   Waking up to this tea on a fresh spring morning is very close to perfection.

This tea leaves your mouth feeling refreshed and helps to improve bad breath.  The floral rose notes in this tea are wild roses, and not a heavy sickening floral flavor, so it is a very light and flavorful tea.  I would recommend enjoying this tea served hot, as icing it will cause it to lose a lot of its more subtle flavors, and with or without sugar as you prefer.  Don’t add milk to this one, it would completely clash with the flavors of the tea and mute most of the flavor notes.

An incredibly delightful herbal white tea that I would love to keep on hand when possible, especially in the springtime! Romantic and invigorating!

PeacaMint from Design A Tea

PeacaMint from Design A TeaI – like our Tea Guru – had my reservations regarding this tea.  Pecan and peppermint?  These seemed like two great tastes that don’t belong together.  Adding rooibos to the mix did nothing to assuage my misgivings.  But, I was curious.  I mean, this was actually a holiday tea sold by Design A Tea, a signature blend, not some wacko concoction that some weirdo created on a whim.  So somebody at Design A Tea decided that combining the flavors of rooibos, pecan and peppermint was not only a good idea, but, tasted good enough to make it a signature blend.

Finally, my curiosity overpowered my doubts and I decided to brew it.  And you know what?  This actually … works.  The naturally nutty flavor of the rooibos marries well with the flavor of the pecan, and these warm, sweet flavors offer a pleasing contrast to the cool, crisp flavor of the peppermint.  And best of all, the flavors of the pecan and peppermint manage to offset that funky rooibos aftertaste that I dislike.

This is really good!

Design A Tea describes this tisane as

Have to give credit to my step-son Ben on this one. I mentioned that we needed to make a holiday blend for the 2008 season. He returned with this one. I will admit I’m not a big peppermint fella, but this combo is GREAT. Hope you enjoy this blend… we sure do.

I like this much better than I ever expected I would.   If I were to change anything about this … I’d change the name.  It’s just … a wacky name.  But then, I thought that combining pecan and peppermint was pretty wacky too, and that ended up working.  So, maybe they should just keep the name the way it is.
