Yum! Chocolate! My sweet tooth was very happy when I received this sample of Belgian Chocolate Rooibos. I love having hot chocolate later in the evening, but sometimes, it’s just too heavy for me, and I want something lighter, and that’s when I really enjoy a chocolate rooibos blend such as this.
In my opinion, chocolate and rooibos work very well together. Although chocolate is, of course, sweet and rooibos possesses its own natural sweetness, the combination of the two does not, surprisingly, come off as sickeningly sweet. Rather, the blend is smooth, with a nice amount of richness.
The aroma of this rooibos blend is very luscious and chocolate-y and got my taste buds eager for a taste right away. Since rooibos has very low tannin levels, you can steep it for a longer period of time and really develop the flavor, which is what I did on this occasion, so that I could really taste the chocolate.
And I’m glad I did! The flavor is very delicious and smooth, with a creamy chocolate flavor that lingers on the palate. It is not overly sweet; however, there is some sweetness to it (which, if you are indulging in a chocolate drink, you must want some sweetness, right?) A small amount (just a pinch!) of sugar will help bring out some of the chocolate richer tones and make this drink a very rewarding experience.
Culinary Teas describes this rooibos blend as
Rooibos is also known as Red Bush or Red Tea. The ultimate chocolate and rooibos experience. Rich, creamy Belgian chocolate with smooth, satisfying rooibos. A great herbal tea iced or hot.
I have not tried this tea iced, so I can’t say whether or not that would be good from experience, but I can tell you that as a hot beverage, it’s very delicious. Rooibos is also loaded with antioxidants so it’s not only yummy, but good for you too. And, there is no caffeine (except for any possible trace amounts in any chocolate additives, although I did not see any chocolate chunks in the blend), so it’s perfect for after dinner, as a late night treat!
