Vitalife Matcha from Vitalife MatchaI am a huge fan of {en:Matcha} which is a finely hand-ground powder from Green Tea leaves.   Matcha should not be confused with “powdered green tea” which is often sold in health stores.  While all Matcha teas are a powdered green tea, not all powdered green teas are Matcha.  Matcha is an extremely high quality powdered green tea which is carefully grown in the shade with plenty of moisture and picked early with only the best tea leaves on the tea tree being plucked then carefully dried and ground to a powder.   A high quality Matcha will have the same consistency and feel of a very soft, highly refined talcum powder, with a bright emerald green color and a sheen to the powder.

Vitalife Matcha is of very high quality, as is evident by the look, feel, and flavor of the Matcha itself. This is a very strong and bold Matcha, with strong vegetative and somewhat grassy tones to it.  It is very thick and rich as a good quality Matcha should be, and stands up fantastically to milk and sweetener if you prefer your Matcha served as a latté.  Because the flavor is so strong and intense, this would make a fabulous iced chai latté!

The dried Matcha powder has a brilliant shamrock green color, has a nice finely ground appearance with a soft non-gritty texture.  The aroma of the dried leaves as well as the brewed liquor has strong green vegetative overtones, with the scent of fresh tea leaves, and a smooth and mellow earthy quality.

Our Matcha is grown in Uji, a city of the Kyoto Prefecture, Japan – famed for pioneering the latest Matcha-growing and cultivating techniques, and its perfectly-suited climate.

It is grown in a pesticide-free environment using traditional farming methods. When our Matcha is picked, only the very top leaves of the bush (the ones that contain the highest concentration of catechins, and the smoothest flavour) are hand-selected.

These leaves are then dried, de-veined, and de-stemmed in a specially designed wind-tunnel that separates the stems from the main part of the leaf, or the ‘flesh’. After this, the ‘flesh’ of the leaves (tencha) is stone-ground into a fine powder.
On traditional stone mills, it can take up to one hour to grind just 30 grams of our Matcha into the powder you see in our tins.

Once ground into a fine powder, the tea is then sealed in separate foil bags, and into separate tins – ensuring that the tea is no longer exposed to oxygen thus maintaining its ‘just picked’ freshness up until the point of being served.

I found the flavor to be exceptional, certainly one of the better Matcha teas I have tasted.   I would consider it to be between premium and ceremonial grade Matcha, but is definitely far better than ordinary culinary Matcha.  It leaves a lovely mellow sweetly green aftertaste that leaves you wanting to drink more.

This Matcha is definitely a special treat for me, and a very relaxing and soothing tea.  I have found that for me it eases stomach problems and enhances your overall feeling of health* as one cup of Matcha contains ten times as many antioxidants as what is found in one regular cup of green tea.   If you want to have a spa-like experience with your tea that is a meditative, peaceful experience to ground and de-stress you, then this is a great Matcha to drink.

Matcha is one of the more gourmet styles of tea, and is certainly usually one of the more expensive teas on the market.  However Matcha tea is an acquired taste, and you have to experiment a lot with it to see how much Matcha powder in your water provides you with the best flavor.  Most people either really love it and become Matcha enthusiasts like myself, however other people do not like the flavor because of its heavy vegetative flavor and thickness.

If you are trying Matcha for the first time, you should start by following the instructions on brewing from the manufacturer, but start with just a little Matcha powder, then add more to taste as you are trying it out.  If you don’t like the flavor of unsweetened Matcha (which can have a bit of a bitter aftertaste), then try adding sweetener and/or milk.  Many people who don’t like plain Matcha enjoy a good Matcha latté with sugar and milk, whether hot or iced, in a similar way that Masala {chai} is traditionally served.
